An hour later, Jasmine was climbing the stairs once more. Matron had made her repeat that climb twice before deeming her worthy of retrieving her dinner. Jasmine had only scooped up a bowl of tomato soup and a grilled cheese sandwich before sitting down at her usual table in the back of the room. It was comfort food—Jasmine knew that as she climbed back up to her room, feeling the weight of it in her stomach.

Jasmine felt entirely empty now that the anger had subsided, and she was forced back into her usual state of mind. She’d needed something to fill that void. Food was the closest thing to comfort she could think of, aside from sitting outside again. Going out there twice in one day was pushing it. Someone had seen her earlier, and she wasn’t sure who it was, but if they saw her again and reported it, Jasmine would need more than comfort food to get over that tongue-lashing.

In the luxury of a quiet, empty room, Jasmine readied for bed. When she lay down, she thought of the girl with chestnut hair smiling at her.
