CHAPTER 31 ~ JACKSON

“Don’t you ever talk to me like that again,” Christine whispered with as much menace as she could muster.

“Don’t you ever slap me like that again,” I said.

“If you think you’re something, you’re not. You’re just a little punk, Jackson.”

“And you’re just a slut who’s starting to look not so little. In fact, you’re a fat slut. I don’t even know why that dude tried to pick you up.”

She raised her hand to slap me again, but I raised my shoulders and bowed up. I was still shorter than her, but my shadow was raising itself up like a giant, threatening anyone in my vicinity, which currently was my annoying sister who I was beginning to believe needed just one good punch in her life. One thing that would humble her superior self, and make her cry, and beg me to never do it again.

“You slap me and I’ll hit you so hard you won’t know yesterday from today,” I said.

She glared at me, her eyes possessed by something else until she lowered her hand.

“So you think you’re man of the house now.”

“No, Christine. This isn’t a house I ever want to be man of.”

“If you ever hit me, I’ll call the cops.”

“So officer Will can come back and seduce Mom?”

“I’m just warning you, Jackson.”

“I’m warned.”

She looked like she wanted to say something else, but she didn’t and went back to her room. I didn’t want to sleep because that’s where the monster waited to eat me in small chunks because my subconscious couldn’t pull itself out of the dream’s grasp. Or maybe it had nothing to do with the subconscious and everything to do with the fact that demons can enter our minds and play with whatever was stored inside.

“Jackson?”

Christine was back peering around the corner.

“What now?” I asked.

She stared at me for a moment and I couldn’t read her blank face.

“Never mind…” she said as she disappeared around the corner.

I wondered what she could have possibly wanted to say, but I didn’t care that much so it didn’t occupy my thoughts for long. I needed something else to fill my mind—anything that wasn’t horrible monsters or sisters from hell.

School started next week and we still hadn’t bought school supplies because we never had money. Mom and Dad never said it, but I knew. Surely Christine knew too. We were poor. Not so poor that we were homeless. Just poor enough to be trapped inside this small box and that’s all we would ever have.

I decided to go get my own school supplies. I looked at the clock. It was six in the morning so I’m sure the store was open. I went to the kitchen counter where Mom liked to leave her purse. I fished inside the bag filled with receipts, a tampon, a pad, loose change, a cough drop that looked half sucked, a five dollar bill which I put in my pocket, and finally the credit card I would need to get my notebooks and everything else I needed for school.
