CHAPTER 19 – Joanie

My head felt like a shit ton of bricks had been stacked upon it. Struggling to open my eyes, I moaned. My body felt heavy. I couldn’t seem to move my arms and legs. I tried to remember what had happened. There had been the attack at the cottage.

I remembered the escape through the tunnels. The boat, and the boys rowing us in the underground river, I remembered all of that. Then it went blank. Shapes were starting to come into focus, and to my surprise, it was my mother who was looking down at me.

To clarify, that would be Jenny Clark, the woman who had raised me, and the same one that I had been so certain I had drained.

“Mom?” I croaked.

I know that I said that she was no longer my mother. But you can’t live your entire life knowing someone as your mom and then all of the sudden stop calling them that.

“Baby girl,” she whispered, “I had hoped you would get away.”

She looked over her shoulder at the locked door and then pulled something out of her purse. It was blood. She lifted the bag to my mouth, and my teeth pierced the plastic. I sucked it dry in less than a minute.

“I don’t have any more right now, but I will get you some. Joanie, these are terrible people. We have to get you away from here.”

“Where are Adrian, Alden, and Abel?”

She shook her head, “I don’t know. I would expect that they are locked somewhere in the building.”

“Where are we?”

She bit her lip, “There is so much I need to tell you, and we have very little time. Joanie, I knew that you were a vampire, I have always known. I am so sorry that I didn’t prepare you better.,”

“What?” I gasped, “How did you know?”

“There were others,” she swallowed. “I have done things that I am not proud of. We were taught that vampires were vicious killers. I was very young when I joined the Alliance. I didn’t know how twisted everything could become until it was too late, and Viv was gone.”

“Mom, what is the Alliance?”

She frowned before answering. “The Alliance is a secret organization of humans that are dedicated to rid the world of vampires. There are many different factions of the Alliance.”

“Are you a hunter like Susan?” I hated the fear that was in my voice.

“No,” she shook her head. “The Alliance is very secretive, and you are not allowed to talk about what you are asked to do. Not even with other Alliance members. I didn’t know that Susan and Bill were hunters until we went on the run. Everything went crazy at that point.”

“If you aren’t a hunter, what are you?”

My mother gave me a wan smile, “I was part of a new program. They were attempting to rehabilitate the offspring of the vampires. Your father and I wanted a child, and I am not able to carry one. We went through years of training about what to do if our project went wrong.
