Chapter Ten
Dylan
I’ve never been sober before, during, or after a show all at once like I am tonight. It’s a little unnerving. I can’t tell if I did any better this time around than I have in the past, but based on the guys’ reactions when we get off stage, I’d say I did at least slightly better. I sang lead for most of the night, which isn’t anything new, but again, I’m usually not at all sober. I found myself thinking about it quite a bit, most of my anxious thoughts stemming from the fact that I didn’t even have a small baggie of cocaine in my pocket like I usually do. Honestly, just having it in there is somewhat of a security blanket for myself. However, whenever the desperate need for the drug surfaced, I’d just think about Aubrey.
I didn’t lie to her when I said I currently wasn’t using anything, not even weed. I haven’t taken anything for about three days now, but this morning, when we found out she’s pregnant with my kid, I knew I couldn’t just go to my room and snort a few lines like I so desperately wanted to. Whether or not Aubrey and I are together or ever will be, the baby is my priority, and a family is everything I’ve ever wanted. I’ll be damned if I sabotage it all on my own. I know she’s still really early in the pregnancy, but starting now with an actual sobriety plan is in the best interest of everyone.
“You did great, man,” Kyler says and gives my shoulder squeeze, pulling me from my thoughts. “Honestly, I think that may have been our best show.”
“Thanks,” I mutter and give him a small grin.
Before I compliment him in return, Noah, Ayden, and Oliver approach us, and Ayden tells us, “I’m going out tonight. I know a girl that I met at that charity event in Beverly Hills last year. She lives here, so I’m going to meet up with her.”
I smirk and raise my brows in question as Oliver stares at him and asks, “You have a girl? What the fuck is that?”
“No, I don’t have her,” Ayden retorts with an eye roll. “We just meet up whenever we’re in the same city and shit.”
“You mean you hook up?” Kyler jokes as we head for the back entrance toward our waiting car.
“I suppose so. We definitely do that,” Ayden says with a chuckle and the lot of us laugh at him.
Once we’re in the car, the guys all get themselves glasses of various liquors. When Kyler offers me an empty glass in question, I shake my head no. He raises his brows in surprise, and all I can do is shrug.
“Really?” he asks with confusion lacing his voice.
I nod and mumble, “Yeah, I’m just trying the completely sober thing.” I shrug again. “Cutting everything out, you know?”
“Good for you, man,” he says softly and puts his own glass in the cup holder, not touching it for the remainder of the ride in a silent sign of solidarity.
