ONE

“Melissa, ya alright?”

It was Josie and following in behind her was Ricky. “I don’t get it. A chance to strike at the enemy and rescue some people.” Melissa said.

Josie sat next to her and placed a supportive arm around her. The smell of cold air and cigarettes did not bother Melissa. She took warmth from the comfort.

“Melissa, things have been going from worse to shit this whole night. Major Jamieson is trying to keep everyone’s morale up but…”

There was only so much one person could do the feeling that a painful death awaited most was enough to gnaw at any resolve.

“Some of the people are on about leaving now. There’s no more optimism left.” Ricky said in a lower voice.

“Melissa, shit’s coming our way and we will need you.” Josie said.

Hope would not get them all killed.

She started to question the merits to disobeying orders that had kept them alive since the dead began walking. Now even those orders were blurry at best.

“There’s an emergency truck at the back. If things get bad, we will need to use it.”

Thumbs up from them which was reassuring to Melissa that they would have an exit plan if needed.

The Major and captain were both blinded by vengeance at this point.

“If you fancy going Awol, let us know.” With a brazen voice Josie stood up, taking Ricky with her.

Melissa was grateful to their offer of support and help, but she did not want to abandon the Major. Nor did she want to leave those who were staying.

She checked her watch, although not accurate it said it was 4:30am. She stayed awake awhile longer but then gave into the demands of sleep.
