Chapter Eleven
Once inside, I expected to be inundated with questions from the numerous guests. But the second we crossed over the threshold, we didnât see one person hovering about for the latest gossip. The pit in my stomach grew as I realized just how quickly everyone obeyed Lukeâs parents and to what extent.
Rapid footsteps echoed down a nearby hallway, and Enzo appeared in front of us. His grim expression did nothing to ease my nerves.
Lukeâs grip around my waist tightened. âIf youâre acting as a messenger for my parents, donât bother,â he barked.
âMy apologies, Master Luca, but you know my commitment to my duties,â Enzo replied with a slight bow of his head.
My fiancé stiffened next to me. âI do, and therefore, you can tell Mother and Father that anything they wish to say to me, they can say in front of Ruby Mae or not at all.â
I pulled out of his hold to face him. âHoney, maybe you should speak to them. They were caught by surprise tonight in front of guests. Cut them a little slack.â
Lukeâs eyebrows lifted toward his hairline. âYou are taking their side?â
âNo-o-o, not exactly,â I uttered. âBut I saw how your mother was making an effort before I screwed up. I think you should give them a chance to talk to you in private.â
âYou were not the one to cause offense tonight,â Luke growled. âFirst, they provided no food despite knowing your status as a non-vampire. And then their reaction to you was an abomination.â
My stomach growled again in solidarity with the no food comment. Enzo frowned at my discomfort. âI will be sure to have somebody send a meal to your room as soon as I finish here. That is an egregious oversight, and I take full responsibility for it.â
âNo, you shall not,â countered Luke. âThat is one of many offenses for which my parents owe both of us an apology. And if talking to them now will move us forward, then perhaps confronting both of them would be prudent.â
âI believe that would be the best course of action for now, Master Luca,â Enzo agreed. âIf you were to attend to them in their quarters, I will make sure Miss Ruby is escorted back to her room.â He rushed off to find some help.
Luke cupped my cheek with his hand. âWill you be okay?â
I leaned into his touch. âWill you?â
He sighed, his thumb caressing my skin. âDespite what happened tonight, they are my only family. And there are things to be said. Bridges to be mended on both sides.â
âYou sound very wise for your old age,â I teased, wanting to ease his tension.
Luke took a step closer and kissed my forehead. âNo, Iâve just learned a lot being with you and your family.â
My heart warmed, and I wrapped my arms around him. âYou know, they consider you a part of us, too.â
âI know.â He planted a kiss on my forehead. âIt is my desire to have the kind of relationship with my parents that you do with your family that spurs me on right now.
