Chapter Ten – Lola

Big Mike called Sylvester after the meeting. I was there with him, in his office, as he spoke to Mike, sitting in one of the chairs facing his grand mahogany desk. I’d texted Viper and Maddox to get their asses up here, so they should be getting in soon.

No one had tried to sleep tonight. We all knew better. With everything we’d been through, sleep fell to the wayside more often than not. Who knew there were so many kooks and nutcases in this city? I used to think I was the only one. Hell, I used to think I was a little bit special, being a serial killer and all.

I close my eyes for one minute and everybody’s lost their fucking minds just like me. Trying to give me a run for my money or something, knock me off my throne and wear the crazy pants themselves.

Not while I was still kicking, they wouldn’t.

“It was close,” Big Mike was busy saying. Sylvester had put him on speaker, set his phone down on his desk between us. “The Mad Prophet wasn’t there. It was someone else taking count, asking questions to anybody who wanted to join. I thought I had it, but the asshole recognized me.”

At hearing that, my heart skipped a beat, and I leaned forward in the chair. “What?” As I asked it, the door to Sylvester’s office opened, and Viper and Maddox slipped in. Mads took the chair beside me, while Viper stood to my right.

“They know who I am, apparently,” Big Mike said in a huff. “He almost killed me, too. I would’ve been shot dead if it wasn’t for Harvey.”

I leaned forward so much that I nearly fell out of my chair. “What?” I hated to describe my voice as shrill, but that’s exactly how that particular word left me, mostly because I was so shocked I didn’t quite know how to react to that. I mean, what the fuck?

What the hell did he mean, if it wasn’t for Harvey?

“Yeah. Harvey was there.”

My mouth dropped. All eyes in the room were on me, and, you know, I took insult to that, because I’d explicitly told Harvey not to go. Okay? It wasn’t like it was my idea to send Harvey out to the wolves. “What?” I hissed. “I didn’t tell him to go—actually, I told him not to.”

“You told Harvey our plan?” Maddox asked, miffed.

“No,” I spoke quickly. “He offered to go himself earlier today. He said he’d be more than happy to do it, and I told him not to. I didn’t tell him we were sending Mike—” Sylvester had caught the tail end of that conversation, and apparently he hadn’t told the others.

“It’s a good thing he was there,” Big Mike cut in. “He saved my life. He’s the only reason I wasn’t shot point-blank tonight.” As he said it, he didn’t sound too thrilled at the reality that Harvey had saved his life.

Maddox grumbled, “I find that hard to fucking believe.
