Chapter Twenty-One

Alan was thoughtful as he slowly made his way back to the interrogation room. His jealousy about the man at the hotel must have warped his brain. Since then, he had acted like an overgrown school boy. He winced when he thought back to the episode on the quayside.

Maybe he had been over-intimidating; though, to be honest, Agnes could be very trying at times. She was certainly a woman with a mind of her own. Even at school, she had always voiced her opinions strongly. But wasn't that why he had admired her? Meeting up again after all these years had been wonderful – for him, it was a dream come true. Everything had been going so well. They had even talked of buying a home together. But his dream had been shattered.

By now, Alan had reached the interrogation room. He peered through the tiny one-way mirror set in the thick, heavy door. Larry was still sitting exactly where he had left him, but now his elbows were perched on the table and his face was resting in his hands.

Alan stood outside the room for several minutes as thoughts of the day's events flooded his mind. Could it be possible that this young man wasn't the killer they were looking for? Was Larry really capable of killing two women, before trying to kill a third? And if so, for what reason?

At the moment, he and his team were working on what Susan Matthews had told Doctor Nichols on the way to the hospital. Yet, even when she thought she might die, Sue had stressed that Larry would never have stabbed her. Nevertheless, everything checked out: the time he signed off duty and the fact that he was known to creep up behind his friends and wrap his arms around them. His sergeant was convinced they had the right man in custody.

“Case closed,” Andrews had said, as they drove away from the quayside.

And, at this point, despite what Agnes thought, or how innocent the young man looked, Alan felt he had to agree with his sergeant.

Larry looked up when the door opened and the chief inspector walked in.

“Larry Parker, I am arresting you on the charge of murder. Anything you say…”
