Angie found Pete’s keys at the back of his closet and unlocked the steamer trunk he had brought from New Jersey.

Books.

Memorabilia.

And a huge gun wrapped in an oil cloth.

Next to it a box of bullets.

She lifted out the gun.

It was heavy.

She took out the box of bullets and opened it.

Stared at the brass-tipped slugs inside.

When she’d first seen the gun, years before Holly was born, she’d said, “Where’d you get that thing?”

“It was my dad’s. From when he was a military policeman.”

“Why do you keep it?” she asked.

He shrugged.

“I dunno. I never really knew him. It just kinda helps me imagine him, is all. Don’t worry, I’ll keep it locked away.”

Angie took the gun and the bullets and sat at the computer.

She clicked on the lamp and saw the name Smith & Wesson on the barrel.

The bullets said they were for a .45 caliber revolver.

Whatever that meant.

She found YouTube and typed: “How to load a .45 Smith and Wesson” and hit enter.
