A few hours later I awoke. “Where are we?” I called to Cap.

“Almost to the southern tip of the island. We’ll be there soon.”

“So, tell us what to expect from these dragons,” Eli asked. He was in the passenger seat again, a few feet away. “How did you get in with them?”

I took a deep breath. It was kind of a long story. “The sea dragons of Japan live in harmony with a small handful of monks. Every thousand years they create a katana with the assistance of the monks, fired by their flames. They are the strongest swords in creation, and imbued with magic. For instance, they don’t just kill a demon’s body, they kill their spirit, too, so they can’t run back to Hell with their tail between their legs.”

Eli’s eyes had grown wide as I spoke. “Your katana is one of them.”

“Yes.” I smiled and reached back to caress the hilt. “So, when they create the katana, it usually goes to one of the younger monks. However, challengers may battle for the sword as well. A small tournament of elite warriors is held, and the victor keeps the sword. The last tournament was held in the 1940s. I was one of those challengers. I won the katana.”

“And the dragons have a bit of a sore spot about it, too,” Riley added.

“Not all of them,” I said stiffly. “Mostly just the monk who was in line to get the sword. They are expert swordsmen and women, and they are not used to an outsider being victorious in the tournament. Most outsiders that challenge the dragon monks fail. I did not.”

“Impressive,” Eli said.

I shrugged. “I had over a century of practice. Perks of being immortal.”

“So where in all this is the part where they owe you a favor?” Donovan asked from the back of the plane. So, he had been paying attention, despite his continued silent treatment.

“They don’t exactly owe me a favor,” I said. “But as one of the victors of the thousand year tournament, I am revered by the monks—most of them,” I tacked on after Riley shot me a look.

“So you’re hoping they’ll come to your aid,” Eli asked.

“Yes, fingers crossed.”

“Fingers crossed?” Donovan echoed with a frown. “We’re running a bit thin on allies here, what with the dingo shifters trying to murder us.”

“I’m sorry our adventure isn’t all sunshine and daisies,” I growled. “I don’t recall ever guaranteeing an awesome time. In fact, I offered each of you a chance to back out. That door is still open.”

We locked gazes. His eyes were a maelstrom of pain. I looked away.

At that same moment something hit the side of the plane and it plummeted from the sky.
