Maya flinched. ‘Jesus. What are you doing here?’

Farah simply tilted her head and sighed. ‘I will ignore your attempt at blasphemy.’

‘Damn it. You’re getting in the way of my op.’ Maya tried to push past Farah.

Farah’s expression was almost bored as she grasped Maya’s arm and pulled her close. ‘I want you to listen very carefully to what I am about to tell you.’

‘Hey, I don’t have time for this—’

‘I said listen. In about thirty seconds, Omar Badawi is going to die.’

Maya almost choked. She couldn’t believe what she was hearing. She shook her head, confused. ‘How?’

‘Jamal Sidek is outside. He has the perfect sniper’s perch. Perfect line of sight. Perfect angle of fire.’

Maya stiffened, her eyes widening. If Jamal was here and he was targeting Badawi, then the op was blown. Compromised.

No. No. No...

Maya reacted, tearing herself away from Farah, keying her mic. ‘Scalpel Two! Abort! Threat imminent! Get Green Goblin back into the club right now!’

‘It is far too late to save Badawi.’ Farah wagged a finger at Maya, like an adult admonishing a wayward child. ‘All you can do now is go after Jamal Sidek...’

Gasping, desperate, Maya pressed through the crowd, leaving Farah behind. ‘Scalpel Two? Do you copy? I say again, threat imminent! You need to abort now!’

Maya felt like she was moving too fucking slow. Too many people in the way. But she kept pushing, powering forward, shouldering her way through.

She was almost at the main entrance now.

The front doors were just ahead of her—

That’s when she heard the gunshot. It sounded distinct over the throbbing music — a supersonic crack that split the air.

Maya felt her stomach seize up.

Two more shots followed in quick succession.

A pause.

Then two more shots.

A plate-glass window to Maya’s right suddenly exploded inward, and a bouncer crashed through, blood geysering from a chest wound, and he hit the floor back-first, skidding to a stop at the feet of a group of shrieking girls.

Everything went to hell just then.

The club erupted into panic and pandemonium.
