Info at Townhall

Town Hall was an imposing stone and glass building that sat at the end of the large greenway stretching through the center of Main Street. The building’s facade was a blend of ruggedness and transparency. Large gray and brown, rough-cut stones formed the base of the building and reflected the town’s connection to the surrounding mountains. Rising upward, the stone walls were interspersed with large panes of expansive glass that allowed natural light to flood the interior spaces while also providing a panoramic view of the lush greenway that lay before it. The entire structure was capped with a classic clock tower that paid respect to the town’s historical roots.

Jessie hurried up the wide, stone stairs leading to the impressive double glass doors. Inside, she quickly passed spaces designed to be both efficient for town business and welcoming to its citizens. She barely noticed the thoughtfully laid out meeting rooms, offices, and public spaces as she headed for the back of the first floor where she knew the mayor’s office resided.

There was no one to announce her, so she walked up to the large wooden door and knocked twice.

“Come in,” came the call from the other side of the door.

Jessie pushed it open and stepped inside. The room exuded professional warmth. It was spacious, with high ceilings that created a feeling of openness and grandeur. Being set at the very rear of the building, natural light flooded the space, playing against the warm, natural hues of the walls and the dark fabrics of the furniture.

At the heart of the office was a large, stately desk of rich, dark wood, covered in stacks of neatly organized documents, a high-quality pen set, and a few personal mementos belonging to the mayor.

Maggie Beaumont sat in a plush, high-backed, leather chair, scribbling furiously before looking up to see who had entered the space. She smiled warmly at the police department’s consultant. “Jessie. What a pleasant surprise.” She placed her pen down and motioned for Jessie to take a seat in the chair opposite her.

Jessie took the seat, her eyes locking briefly with the mayor’s. “You know, you really should have an assistant or someone sitting outside your office. You shouldn’t let just anyone walk in like that.”

The mayor waved her hand dismissively. “Usually, Will is out there when he’s not at the office. This is Pine Haven. We have an open-door policy here, and I need my constituents to know I am always available to them.”

Jessie’s lips pressed together in a thin smile. She appreciated the mayor’s dedication, and she admired her courage. Especially after the trauma she had suffered at the hands of Jessie’s brother. “I’m sorry to just barge in unannounced like this, and I want you to know I wouldn’t be here if it weren’t important.”

Mayor Beaumont removed the glasses she wore, folded them, and placed them next to the papers she worked on. “What is it? Has there been a break in the cases?”

Jessie leaned forward, her gaze steady.
