Chapter 10

Interview Possible Suspects

The next day, I got up. Made myself breakfast while ignoring my broken table and all it represented, including my break up with Lance. Pippy usually floated in while I ate and complained that she couldn’t sleep or eat because she was a ghost. But today, she didn’t, and I could eat in silence, which wasn’t necessarily good. It gave me too much time to think.

When I finished, I thought about checking on her. Because if she wasn’t downstairs, she had to be in her room. But I decided to leave her alone and went to work. I arrived at the city building before Heath and got to work. There was plenty to do, like responding to emails, setting up social media releases for the next week, and taking calls.

At nine-thirty, Heath arrived with a coffee for him and cocoa for me. The smell of both struck my nose in a good way. It was sweet of him to get me something, and I took the drink he offered.

“Thanks, Heath.” I sipped the cocoa and immediately knew he hadn’t gone to BB’s but somewhere else. It tasted fine but wasn’t my Grandy’s recipe. I would not be wasting my calories on it. Not when there were plenty of scrumptious goodies at my parents’ bakery.

“You’re welcome.” He smiled, but it didn’t reach his eyes. I wondered if it was because Gladiola had dirt on him and forced him to attend that coven meeting or something else.

“Are you alright? You seem tired?” I set down my drink and shuffled some papers on my desk, trying to act casual.

“Fine. Why do you ask?” He headed into his office.

I followed behind him and closed the door when we were inside. “You look drained, is all.” I purposefully used the word drained, hoping it would spark a reaction.

Heath chuckled, dropping into the leather chair situated behind his desk. The phone was already ringing. Thankfully, his assistant slash secretary caught the call and took a message.

“Is that any way to talk to your boss and mayor?” He turned on his computer.

“Probably not,” I said with a smile. “But I thought we were also friends.” I made a point to emphasize the friends part, hoping he would open up to me about the meeting with Gladiola. That way, I wouldn’t have to pry.

“We are,” he said and then shook his head. “I’ve got a lot going on. Fern is pregnant, and that makes sleeping difficult.”

“Congratulations,” I replied, and I meant it. “When is she due?”

“Thanks, and in a few months.” He didn’t seem very excited. Or maybe he was already in work mode as he clicked on something and made a horrible face. “Listen, unless you need to discuss something PR-related, I better get busy.”

“Oh, sure.” I paused, playing with the pen on his desk. “About Grandy’s birthday, that was nice of you and Fern to show up. I know Grandy was pleased to have you there.”

Heath locked eyes with me. “Are you sleuthing, Ruby Crosswell? Because this feels like the start of an interrogation.
