Chapter 7

Em rolled silently off the bed and tiptoed across the room. Salt was sitting on the sofa reading a book and she was surprised that he didn’t hear her.

He had been with them a year and she wanted to celebrate their anniversary alone with him for a while. She really enjoyed his company, and Rory seemed calmer with another man present to watch over her. She had discussed her plans with Rory the night before, and he had agreed not to interfere even if he woke up. The way he was sleeping, Em didn’t think she had much to worry about.

She pulled the package quietly out of the closet and moved over to stand behind the sofa with it hidden from view. Salt was paying no attention to her at all. She leaned a bit closer to see what he was reading. It was an extremely intense novel about a man who was accidentally turned into a shifter. “Good book?”

Salt visibly jumped, his hand to his chest as he stared at her. “Holy shit. You scared me half to death. Why are you awake?”

“Because I want to be awake. Do you know what today is?”

“No clue whatsoever.”

Em smiled and handed him the package. Salt had been bugging them to teach him to use a sword, and Em had swiped one from Joel’s collection for him to use. She had also carved him one from wood to teach him with. Salt frowned and took the package. “What’s this for?”

“You have been with us for one year.”

“I have?” He appeared truly stunned, and Em nodded. Salt chuckled and reached under the sofa. He handed her a wrapped package, sticking out his tongue to harass her. He had adopted that particular habit from her. “I actually keep a calendar to know what day it is. It’s a hang-up from the old days, but… I do it anyway.”

“I didn’t know that. That means we missed your birthday.”

He shrugged. “No biggie. I don’t celebrate it anyway. It just reminds me that I’m still human.”

Em nodded. Seven more humans had joined their community and by all rights, they could probably turn him. She didn’t want to turn him and lose his warm body or his warm dick. “So when did you turn twenty-six?”

“Three months ago.”

She leaned to whisper in his ear. “I can’t promise this, because I need to discuss it with Rory. If he agrees, and you let me know the day before your twenty-seventh birthday, I will turn you.”

This time he was actually stunned, his bottom lips drooping as he stared at her. “You will?”

“Yes.”

His smile was brilliant. “I’ll let you know.”

“Okay. Open your present.”

Salt scrambled to his feet, kneeling on the sofa and taking her cheeks in his palms. “Can I tell you that I love you?”

“That would be nice.”

“I love you. Not just because you said you would turn me. I was gonna tell you before you said that.”

“I know. I love you also. It’s been creeping up on me for a while now.
