CHAPTER 8

The Queen was civil, at first.

She sat Mr. Oakes across from her in one of the many parlors of her palace and smiled pleasantly at him, while Viorel and I stood to her right and left respectively.

There were even refreshments on the table between the Queen and her prey, small sandwiches, sweet delicacies, and cubes of cheese that lay forgotten like mere props.

Despite Lovina’s questions, Mr. Oakes hadn’t uttered a single word. He simply sat with his hands clasped over his lap, his eyes downcast, his expression resigned.

“I don’t want to hurt you,” Lovina said. “You are too valuable, but if you don’t answer my questions I will have no other choice.”

A tremor went across Mr. Oakes’s shoulders. He was an older man with gray in his hair and wrinkles at the corners of his eyes. He reminded me of Papa, of that generation of proud men who didn’t say much but felt so deeply.

“I need a list of the people who buy Bloodshade from you,” the Queen repeated what she’d said just moments ago.

Still no answer.

Lovina rose from her seat. “I see this endeavor is futile. But you won’t deny me for very long. First, you will suffer for being stubborn, and maybe you will speak then. If you don’t, know that you will end up telling me everything I want to know anyway.” She paused and leaned forward just a little to emphasize her point. “You won’t be able to resist once I feed you my... blood.” The words slithered out of her mouth like a caress followed by a slap.

She straightened, preened her dress, then, as she walked out of the room, she added, “Bishop Viorel, make sure he screams and Flagfall watches.”
