Eudalian simply sat there, his mouth agape while Val eyed him with contempt. The man seemed weak and ineffective. A salesman? Seriously? Perhaps in a different setting under more favorable circumstances, but at the moment, he doubted the man could have sold him a waterproofing ointment for his wings in the middle of a thunderstorm.

“I take it you have none,” Val said. “Perhaps we need to look at who might despise you enough to want your life to be miserable and loveless. Can you think of anyone like that?”

“N–no,” Eudalian replied. “I don’t have any enemies—at least, none that I know of. I can’t imagine anyone…”

“A competitor, perhaps?” Val suggested.

Eudalian shook his head. “That’s impossible. It’s too…personal.”

Val hated to admit it, but he was probably right. The alternative was every bit as preposterous. Why would anyone kill the women this man loved? The idea that another woman would be that jealous was ludicrous. There were plenty of available men who were more worthy of a woman’s affection than this guy. Val simply couldn’t understand the attraction. But then, there was no accounting for taste.

“If you are not the connection, then perhaps it stems from their employment at this firm.”

“I don’t have anything to say to that, either.” Eudalian threw up his hands. “I’m as baffled as you are.”

Val arched a brow. “I believe intrigued is the word I would have chosen. Unless you have no interest in solving the mystery of these deaths.”

“Of course, I do,” Eudalian protested. “I was very fond of both of those women.” His shoulders sagged along with the corners of his mouth. “Just wish I knew what I could do about it.”

Zia tipped her head to one side, her lips twisted into a sideways pucker Val was tempted to kiss. “I can’t help but wonder if it isn’t someone in love with you whom you would never look twice at. Someone you see on a regular basis. A waitress at your favorite restaurant or the woman who cleans your office or does your laundry.”

Her suggestion drew a chagrinned chuckle from Eudalian. “Seeing as how most of those things are done robotically, I can’t see the connection.”

She blew out a breath. “Just goes to show how little I know about how the other half lives.”

Eudalian frowned. “The other half?”

“People in high paying jobs with money to burn.” She shrugged. “I mean, I work in an orphanage. I do those sorts of things myself, no bots required.” With a thoughtful expression, she added, “Letsa would’ve known more about that than I do. Her job paid pretty well, or so I’ve been led to believe.”

“It did,” Eudalian said with a nod. “And she was worth every credit. She will be very difficult to replace.” He gave Zia a warm smile. “No one could replace her as your sister, either.”

“As my sister, yes,” Zia said. “Obviously, I have no others. But we weren’t close. Still, she was the only family I had, apart from an uncle whom neither of us ever wanted to see again.
