Jordan
Two months later….
MY FAMILY adopted Stephen, and they all fell in love with him. Gradually, so did I. Two months after our first kiss we’d kissed some more, gone on a handful of actual dates, and taken things slow.
Not on his account, but on mine. That was what he kept saying, at least, but I knew it was for both of us. I might’ve been “young and virile,” like my brother so eloquently put it, but I hadn’t had much sex yet. With Stephen I didn’t want to, really, at least not yet. First I wanted to make love and then graduate to other things. To me, making love was special, and while you could have sex or fuck your beloved, you couldn’t make love to a random stranger.
One Thursday afternoon I was in the middle of a job near the library when I heard sirens. I didn’t think much about it. Things happened and sirens were often heard around town, and I moved around a lot so maybe that was why I didn’t pay attention.
About the time I finished cleaning up for old Mrs. Welch, my cell phone went off in my pocket.
“I’m sorry, ma’am, but I have to take this.” I excused myself to the small hallway.
I smiled when I saw the call was coming from Stephen’s phone.
“Miss me already?” I asked, knowing he’d hear my smile.
“Jordan, something’s happened. I’m at the hospital, and they won’t let me go unless—”
“I’ll be right there!” I’d ended the call and gathered my things before I could comprehend I’d moved at all.
“What’s the matter, Jordan dear?” Mrs. Welch looked at my scrambling worriedly.
“My…. Stephen, hospital—Oh God it was him just now, the sirens.” I felt faint for a moment, but then a tiny, wrinkled hand closed around mine and squeezed hard enough to hurt.
“Now stop panicking, Jordan Novotny. He could call you, so he can’t be in too bad shape, can he? Take a deep breath, dear, then drive carefully to the hospital to see your man.” She smiled kindly and reminded me why I missed my grandmother so much.
I breathed as she instructed, then gave her a hug and tried not to run to the truck. Luckily there was never much traffic in our town, and I made it to the hospital in fifteen minutes.
Despite the size of the town, parking was scarce around the hospital, always had been.
“Come on, fucking move!” I screamed at someone trying to maneuver a much-too-large SUV out of a spot.
My heart raced, my head tried to keep it all together, and my hands were starting to shake. As I pulled into the vacant parking space, I tried to keep in mind Mrs. Welch’s words. He’d called. He couldn’t be too badly hurt.
It felt odd to realize I suddenly stood at the reception desk, like time had jumped somehow while I scurried around to get to my boyfriend.
“Sir?” the nurse asked me, probably for the second time.
“Sorry, I’m just a bit shaken, Stephen Dean was brought in? I’m Jordan Novotny.
