Chapter Thirteen
Mark wasn’t sure what this unfamiliar mood was toe-kicking his gut with a sulky pout, but he suspected it might be what his mother would call a strop… and he didn’t like it one little bit. He snatched the toast from the toaster and attacked it with some butter, ploughing a bloody great gouge in it in the process. Shit. He dropped the knife and took a couple of deep breaths. What the hell was wrong with him? He didn’t normally do self-indulgent navel-gazing, and he wasn’t overly precious about his feelings, but dammit, he was pissed. Edward R-for-ridiculous Newton could just go suck an egg. The man was a dick.
Tinkerbell nudged at his thigh, and Mark offered her an edge of the burnt toast. She sniffed at it warily, then looked up as if Mark had lost his mind and walked off.
He watched the sway of her hips with a snort of amusement as she left the room heading for the blanket Cam had generously provided in lieu of a mat. “Everyone’s a critic. I’ll make sure to bring some bacon the next time I get a beating and a gun waved in my face, all right?”
Tink stared back as if the answer were obvious.
“You and your owner are a fucking matched pair,” he grumbled, and returned his attention to breakfast.
As if Mark would take advantage of Edward. Jesus, what the hell was in that man’s head?
Yeah, and who started that whole train of thought going, huh? Okay, well, maybe the whole what-happened-between-us-last-night tease hadn’t been one of his better ideas, but really, who’d have thought Edward would swallow it? He might not approve of Mark, but Mark didn’t think the man’s opinion of him had sunk that low.
It stung, more than it probably should. And, shit, he hoped no one else thought that about him. A shiver of unease rolled through his stomach. Ugh. No, of course they didn’t. Edward was just messing with his head. Mark had great friends, and everyone knew he was a stand-up guy, right? A flirt? Sure. But most took it with a laugh and a grain of salt. Okay, so maybe he’d pissed off a few along the way, mostly those who had their heads too far up their arses to take a joke—his gaze flicked to the closed bathroom door, and his lips twitched—but he’d have anyone’s back who needed and deserved it, and that was the goddamn truth.
So, yeah, it stung. And in truth, Mark had spent some considerable time studying Edward when he’d fallen asleep on the floor next to the couch the previous night. One minute Edward had been talking about his favourite comic con event he’d like to attend, and the next he’d face-planted on the couch alongside Mark’s hips and was out for the count. It would have been funny if it weren’t so damn cute, and yes, sue him, Mark had taken an extra second to thread his fingers through the man’s silken hair as he’d shifted his head aside so Mark could get up and get them both to bed.
