A new life. No more serving others. No more cooking or laundry or cleaning. In fact, all those things will be done for her. Someone will be cooking for her. She’ll never have to worry about another meal again. But the cost? Georgia remembers her head being stuffed into a pile of straw and imagines feeling that way for the rest of her life. If that’s the case, she’d rather die than eat again. But the steak was delicious.

Oval escorts Georgia back to the house on the corner with the gray stone porch steps and the velvet red door and presses the white button on the outside intercom.

“Yes?” a male voice answers.

“It’s me, Jeff.”

The door opens immediately, pulled back by another man wearing all black, though skinnier and less intimidating than Mac. He stares at Oval lustfully as she passes by, and he shuts the door. Georgia follows Oval like a caboose, holding her hand, but Jeff pays her no attention.

“Enjoy it now while it lasts,” Oval whispers. “After a while, they’ll start falling down at your feet and worshipping you.”

They stop at the base of the right end of the horseshoe-shaped stairs, and a minute later, a gorgeous, buxom woman with curls of blonde hair and popping red lipstick, wearing a black dress with a slit from the knees to her closed-toed silver heels, descends from the floor above them.

“Iris,” Oval says humbly and with a frog in her throat.

“Oval,” Iris replies. The tone in her voice on that word alone is enough for Georgia to understand exactly what Oval had told her about this woman, and she can see the animosity that swells within Iris, who marks Oval with her eyes as a rival and a threat to her territory, a problem she can’t dispose of because she does what Kelly tells her to do, and he favors her the most out of all the working girls. She hides it well, but those who grow up in Unwanted facilities are inherently trained to pick up on such hatred.

“So is this the newbie?”

“Yes, this is Georgia.”

“Georgia? And I thought we finally got rid of all the Georgias. I’m going to tell Kelly no more Unwanteds named Georgia. I don’t care how pretty they are.”

Iris extends her hand and touches Georgia’s left cheek and pinches it gently.

“And this one is very pretty, no doubt about it. Kelly has an eye for ’em. She’ll need to put on some weight, though.”

“We already started with a steak-and-egg breakfast at CJs,” Oval says with a salesman’s pitch, as if trying to persuade an unbeliever of Georgia’s worth.

“Well, we’ll see how she does. Kelly’s finished with his morning meeting. He’s waiting in the basement.”

Iris leads them down the hallway, between the two ends of the stairs, that dead ends at a single brown door with a gold lever.

“Kelly spends all of his time during the day here,” Oval says. “He calls it his ‘man cave.’ Don’t ever come here without his or Iris’s invitation.
