Chapter 13

Saturday, February 1

Vice President's House

Northanne Anderson was eating a late dinner by herself. She was in what they called the sitting room, which Northanne merely thought of as the TV room. As she ate, she watched CNN devoting the majority of their news broadcast once again to the incident in the White House. It had been the top story for two days now.

"Must be a slow news day," she mumbled to herself. She got up and headed for the kitchen, which was really called the kitchen, to get the salt shaker. She had sent the maids and cook home early, since it was just her. Grace was out at a State Dinner for some visiting dignitary. Another command performance.

As she pushed into the kitchen door, it bumped something on the other side. Someone was in the kitchen. He reached out and caught the door, pulled it on open.

It was Agent Charles Roth.

"Sorry, Charles," Northanne said.

"Oh, no harm done, I shouldn't have been standing in the way."

Northanne looked around the kitchen. No one else was there. "You shouldn't even be here. Gunning for ghosts?"

It was a very poor attempt at a joke, and she felt instantly sorry she had said it. But Roth's reaction surprised her. He actually laughed.

She laughed with him. "Sorry, I shouldn't have said that."

He just shook his head. "No, that's all right. I know you are joking, I know you didn't mean it. You seem to understand."

She cocked her head at him a little, then just turned and headed for the cabinet where she knew they hid the salt shaker. It was hidden at Grace's instructions, since she wasn't supposed to have salt with her meals. But she knew where it was. As she retrieved it, she looked back at Roth.

"You won't tell on me, will you Charles?"

"No, I promise. Salt isn't on the list of things I am to protect you from."

She smiled. "What are you doing here, anyway? I know you take your job seriously, but it's after 8 p.m. on a Saturday night. Even you don't normally work twenty-four hours."

He smiled sheepishly. "You're right. I need to go home." But he didn't move to leave. She looked him over. He was actually rumpled! Normally, he was impeccably dressed. His clothes had started out that way, only that had been, what? Yesterday? Still, he had that look about him that she liked. The kind you like to see when you get a peek at the airplane pilot if they leave the cockpit door open while you are boarding. He had that kind of look, that look of maturity and competence, but of one still in his prime and able to handle anything, from engines falling off to bad guys taking potshots at you.

"Have you eaten?" she asked him.

"Huh? No, I'll grab something on the way home."

"No you won't." She set the shaker down on the island counter and started looking for another soup bowl. "Raul made some excellent vegetable soup before he left.
