PON1 GENE EXPRESSION SUPPRESSORS
As we mentioned in Chapter 2 , the PON1 gene is calcium-dependent and responsible for carrying the instructions for producing paraoxonase (PON), an enzyme which the body must have in order to break down and eliminate organophosphate pesticide residues. This is why it is so important for the family diet to contain enough calcium! Any substance known to reduce calcium intake or interfere with calcium metabolism should be avoided.
The PON1 enzyme is made in the liver with calcium and secreted in the blood, where it is incorporated into high density lipoproteins (HDL). Overconsumption of any substance that impacts liver function, such as alcohol or high fructose, will suppress PON1 gene activity and lead to disease conditions. 36 While the exact mechanism of PON1 gene suppression is not known, years ago, USDA scientists warned that when dietary magnesium intake is low, consumption of high fructose corn syrup (HFCS) leads to lower calcium levels. 39 When body calcium levels are low, the calcium-dependent PON1 may not be able to perform its job. Since the availability and activity of PON1 are impaired in many children with autism and ADHD, 40 , 41 it is thus important to limit their exposures to any substance known to further suppress PON1, making them even more susceptible to the toxic effects of OP pesticide residues.
The bottom line is that children with autism and ADHD need to avoid consuming foods that may lead to calcium losses, including fructose and HFCS. In the case of pregnant women, we know that if their PON1 gene activity is low, they will be more likely to give birth to a child with ADHD. 42 For this reason, pregnant women also need to avoid consuming foods known to lead to calcium losses. It goes without saying that by avoiding dietary pesticide exposures in the first place, many of these disease conditions can be avoided.
With respect to PON1 gene activity, it is important to note that in addition to alcohol and high fructose, we know of other factors that modulate, or alter, the gene’s expression. 36 , 43 The most important factors, in my opinion, are inorganic mercury and lead exposures. 36 , 43 From previous chapters, we now understand that inorganic mercury and lead exposures occur daily through the consumption of highly processed foods. These particular heavy metal exposures may suppress PON1 gene activity. 36 , 43 In the case of inorganic mercury, we know that as we get older and continue to eat the toxic Western diet, our inorganic blood mercury levels will rise 44 and our PON1 gene activity will fall. I believe the loss of PON1 gene function is one reason why older people are more prone to developing Western diseases such as Alzheimer’s, type 2 diabetes, cancer, and heart disease.
PON1 GENE EXPRESSION IN CHILDREN
What about our children? PON1 gene activity plays an important role in the body’s developing immune system. Age is the most important factor of all, as PON1 activity is very low before birth and gradually increases during the first few years of life in humans.
