The most significant thing that happened the night I wrote about in Chapter 2—when I was eight years old and saw Annie for the first time—was not watching the musical itself, or the fact that I gave voice to my ambition in the car on the way home. It was what happened afterward.

“I know what I want to do with my life,” I said. It felt like my heart was tumbling out of my mouth. As soon as I uttered the words, my father met my gaze in the rearview mirror. In his eyes, I saw a whole galaxy of you-can-do-itness. He didn’t say anything—but he didn’t need to. I knew he believed in me. And more importantly, I knew he loved me no matter what.

It occurs to me now that every good thing that’s ever happened in my career can be traced back to that one moment: sitting in a light blue Buick headed toward Harvard Street in Detroit and looking into that particular pair of hazel eyes in the rearview mirror. If they had shown anything less than wholehearted belief in what, to another parent, might have seemed an impossible dream, the entire trajectory of my life might have changed.

In the end, no one gets far without some kind of support, whether it be from family, friends, mentors, or even strangers. We need each other. Nobody makes it alone.
