Chapter 6

It had taken Kano over a month for the truth to settle in. Adam didn’t want anyone to know about them. At first, he’d thought Adam was too much of a professional to show affection at work. After almost six weeks of getting shut down during the day, Kano had come to accept what had his heart crying foul. Adam was ashamed. There were times when Kano didn’t think about it. Then there were other times, when Adam’s rejection was all Kano could think about. Times like today. It was only nine in the morning. The day hadn’t truly begun, but Kano couldn’t stop watching Adam and stewing. Each time Adam caught his eye, Kano held his breath as he searched for any of the affection Adam showed him last night. Instead, all Kano got was a bland smile before Adam looked away again.

By the third time, Kano couldn’t take another second. “Tim, would you go and find Rylan? He has fifteen models waiting for him. The man is holding up an entire shoot with his tardy ways.”

“On it,” Tim said, coming to his feet.

As Tim headed for the door, Adam focused on Kano, looking concerned. “Should I go downstairs and fill in until Rylan gets here?”

“No. It’s Rylan’s responsibility. Plus, you’re needed here.”

Kano felt Adam’s disappointment from across the room. That was another thing. Sometimes, Kano wondered if he was crushing Adam’s spirit, keeping him from his dreams.

“Okay.” Adam didn’t sound unhappy, but Kano bit back a growl nonetheless. It was like there was no middle ground.

The instant Tim disappeared, Kano moved to his office door and turned the lock. Adam’s smile immediately transformed, turning genuine and mischievous. “So, is Rylan really late or was that a ploy to have me alone?”

A chuckle sneaked out. Kano loved having the real Adam. It never failed. Each time Kano thought to get the man alone and demand Adam explain why he kept shutting Kano out, the moment would come when they were alone, and Kano couldn’t hang on to his anger. “Sarah alerted me of Rylan’s arrival thirty minutes ago.”

“I can’t imagine it’ll take Tim long to figure out you lied.”

Kano shrugged. “Tim is a smart guy. He’ll recognize I wanted him gone and stay that way for a while.”

“Kano…”

Kano knew that tone. Adam was about to lecture him on being the boss and risking Adam’s reputation. Kano shut it down before it started. “They’re sleeping together, so I’m sure Tim will be more than happy to hang around until Rylan finishes up. No doubt they already have a coat closet picked out downstairs.”

Adam’s mouth hung open. “Shut up.” Kano wondered if Adam heard the gossipy tone to his voice. “Tim and Rylan? Shut. Up.”

Kano nodded. “They think I don’t know. I always know everything.”

“But Rylan’s so evil,” Adam said, sounding scandalized.

Closing the distance between them, Kano came to stand over Adam. Two weeks after Kano had hired Adam, he’d purchased a plush loveseat and laptop as Adam’s workstation for odd jobs.
