IT WAS midafternoon when we stopped. Essex drew nearer, and with it, a sense of hesitation. What would we encounter here? This was no mere village. It was a city with its own lord and lady. We had to tread carefully.
The weather grew warmer as spring solidified itself across Mirosa. I forced myself to bite down on the memories of swimming in the ocean during the hotter days on the islands. I recalled Henry didnât like it much. If he could have lived there in the forest, he would have. Heâd bring food for lunches and spend his days sunning himself against a palm tree in patches of warmth. I wondered now if he remembered those days when he was off at war, and that was why he dreamed of quieter days. Maybe it was the Rowan way of coping. They dreamed of what little light they could find in the darkness.
I looked back at Isabelle, and her red-rimmed eyes and disheveled hair, and felt a pang of guilt. What were her biggest regrets? What did she see when she closed her eyes? Did she dream of a better life? Did she see Fray Castor?
None of those questions were simple. Isabelle was like meâbroken, with scars inside and out. Our edges were singed and burnt, and fear weighed us down. She no longer smiled. I wondered if she even knew how. Determination set her eyes into something hard and unreadable. I wondered if she saw the same in me.
She glanced at me as she packed her horse.
There was a strand of hair in her eyes. I wanted to brush it out of the way, but stopped myself.
Her silence didnât help things. I wanted to know what she was feeling, and what her life had been like for the past few months. But when I attempted conversation, she shut me down, only answering direct questions or pretending not to hear me at all. Was she worried that she wouldnât save the children? Or was she thinking about the celestite? I worried about it all too, but mostly, I worried that she wouldnât have the strength to make it that far.
