Chapter Twenty-Three
“Woo, suck it, girl,” Lindsay Nicole said as Aerin gulped her margarita through a penis straw. “One more day of freedom to suck as many penises as you want.” They were in Indianapolis’s trendiest bar for Aerin’s bachelorette party. It was packed on this Saturday night.
Their waitress, Jamie, threw Aerin a sympathetic look from the end of the table while she delivered more drinks. Aerin smiled back, thankful that someone realized how ridiculous most of her wedding party was acting.
“That’s not how it works, you dimwit,” Zoe said. Lindsay Nicole’s face fell, but she quickly recovered. Aerin’s best friend and Josh’s younger sister did not exactly get along, and apparently Zoe was too drunk to censor herself.
“Zoe, play nice. I have to be around this woman the rest of my life,” Aerin whispered. Her mood darkened when she considered that yeah, she’d be getting married tomorrow and marriage was generally a thing that you were in until one of you died. “I’m going to run to the bathroom, okay?”
“Want me to come with?” Zoe asked. She preferred to hit the restrooms with a posse, a practice that Aerin could never understand. She considered it a more private experience, so she shook her head and got up.
She leaned hard against the porcelain sink and closed her eyes, dreading the minutes ticking by, her wedding closer with each one. The stall behind her opened and she heard footsteps approach the sink on the right.
“Hey, you okay?” the woman asked sweetly.
Aerin opened her eyes to find Jamie looking at her, eyes filled with concern. She had long dark hair so shiny and straight that Aerin wanted to touch it to confirm it was real. Around her hazel eyes was a faint ring of liner.
“I don’t know what I’m doing,” Aerin said softly, her head spinning with alcohol. She gripped the sink and squeezed her eyes shut, then looked up at Jamie. “I think I like girls, but I’m marrying a boy.”
“Wow, that’s a bummer,” said Jamie.
“I think this is a mistake, but like, what else am I supposed to do? I can’t not marry him. We’ve been together for years and everybody likes him. And then we get a waitress like you just reminding me of what I’m giving up.” The alcohol apparently destroyed any shred of dignity Aerin had left, but what did it matter? She’d never see this woman again.
Jamie stared at her for a moment, considering. “Do you want to get out of here for a little?” Jamie asked. Aerin nodded and Jamie took her hand.
They exited the bathroom and slipped behind an Employees Only door, a storage room for extra alcohol and bar snacks. Jamie led her to a separate closet filled with glassware and locked the door. A small fluorescent light flickered overhead, casting them in a pale glow that reflected in the glasses.
Jamie leaned against the door, suddenly uncertain. “Is this okay?” She licked her lips and blushed.
“Yeah. This is good,” Aerin said. She felt a
