Chapter 7

Compromise

She’d faked sleep until he had drifted off. Different things worried her and she feared their relationship would survive. One was they were nothing alike. Where they lived was completely different and what they wanted from life seemed to be. Also, she hadn’t been completely forthcoming in an answer she’d given him about why she thought her mate was a unicorn.

That was because they had an incredible connection that she’d feared ruining. It had made her wonder if she should have admitted the dreams started once a gypsy fortune teller told her that her mate was a unicorn shifter. She’d decided that he would think her mad to believe a gypsy even though they were as much a part of the supernatural world as the rest of them were. Now she wasn’t so sure. For now, she was tired and she planned to enjoy the warmth and safety of sleeping in her fated one’s arms.

Urgg! What was that horrible screeching sound? Thank the goddess it stopped. “Good morning Buttercup. Time to rise and shine, unless you want to get lucky first?” Jespers asked. First, she threw a pillow at him then she rolled over and went back to sleep. “Not a morning person? That’s good to know.” He chuckled.

Jespers pulled the blanket off her head and began running his hands over her curves. “Stop it.”

“I think this is a good way to wake you up.”

Pleasurable, yes, But by the time they were through, it looked like they would be late. They hurried to shower and dress then quickly went to the dining room. The two of them immediately got some disapproving looks but it couldn’t ruin their good mood.

Filling their plates, they also got coffee and juice. They would need to eat quickly to observe the games unless a mission was coming up. Yes, it looked like a mission was coming. Once they finished eating, they joined the circle around Gertie. She wondered who they’d found and where they were going.

Gertie must be annoyed at them because she withheld that knowledge. Once they arrived, it was just a field. She knew better than to assume nothing was there. “They are coming. Be prepared.” Gertie called out.

That’s when they were suddenly swarmed. This time it was soldiers and a few of those were female. The one approaching them reminded her of the demon that had attacked Jespers. When the female stepped through the protective field, she kept around them, she was sure. She stepped up and pulled her sword.

“You plan to fight me? I expected at least the male. You won’t be much of a challenge. Maybe he should help you out?” The demoness chuckled.

“Do you plan to talk or fight?” She asked.

“You’re a feisty one. Maybe you’ll give me a good workout.”

Jespers stepped back to give her room. This was her fight. They crossed swords as they tested each other’s reflexes. That the demon had skills, she was sure. But she had skills too. “Why do you fight for evil?” She asked as they danced around each other.
