CHAPTER SEVEN

ABBY was almost afraid to look at Greg during their meal, or even talk to him. It was totally ludicrous that Hallam Lane should think she was interested in his son. His son of all people!

She found it hard to believe that he had jumped to that conclusion. It made no sense, and if she was forced to watch what she was doing or saying to Greg for the whole of the next two weeks it would be no holiday at all. Not that it had promised to be a good one, but at least she had thought that she would have only her own feelings to contend with.

On top of that, each time Jaime came into the room her eyes narrowed thoughtfully on Abby. There had to be something going on here, she decided—something Hallam wasn’t telling her. Why else would the girl look at her so suspiciously and hostilely?

Did she live in? Was she more than just a daily maid? Was she a permanent part of this household? The very thought that she could creep into Hallam’s bedroom via the balcony in the middle of the night without anyone knowing made Abby’s blood run cold.

After lunch Hallam suggested they all take a siesta, but Abby could not sleep. She could not even rest; her mind was in too much turmoil. In the end she got up off her bed, pulled on a straw hat that she had bought during her last holiday abroad, and, after tiptoeing downstairs, quietly let herself out of the house.

The blue pool looked inviting but the sea even more so, and she decided to explore beyond the boundaries of the property. Well-worn wooden steps zigzagged steeply down the cliff to the shore below. Dangerous if you’d had a few drinks, thought Abby, carefully holding onto the handrail until she finally reached the bottom.

The curved headland sheltered the bay and each villa appeared to have its own private section of beach. Everywhere was deserted. At one end was a small marina with several very expensive-looking yachts.

Abby wondered idly whether one of them belonged to Hallam and she spent several minutes looking at the names, trying to decide which might be his. She thought perhaps Fast Lady, or Emma-Jane; they were the only two with English-sounding names.

On the verge of heading back the way she had come and maybe dabbling her feet in the tempting waters of the ocean, Abby suddenly heard a male voice coming from one of the boats. ‘A vision of beauty, no less, come to torment me.’

Having thought they were all empty, Abby looked in startled surprise to see who was speaking. He spoke in English, whoever he was, and a head suddenly appeared from Fast Lady, followed by a long, lean body, deeply tanned and clad in no more than a pair of frayed, cutoff faded denims that looked as though they should have been thrown in the rag-bin many months ago.

It was not quite the attire she would have expected of someone living in one of these exclusive villas.
