“Nurse Jacquelyn.” I can hear Mr. Cumberland’s voice booming down the hall. I am so not ready for this right now. I am at the end of my night shift and I am about to sign off and go home. I am already fantasizing about a long hot shower and a glass of red wine. Still no new toaster. But it won’t stop me from eating a couple of poptarts straight from the box.

“Yes, Mr. Cumberland? What are you here for today?” I know very well why he is here. It’s the third week of the month when his son and daughter-in-law send him in.

“I have indigestion!” he says proudly, like a little kid at show-and-tell.

“Oh right, I’m sure the doctor will give you something that will make you feel better.”

“I heard you went out on a date with my grandson.”

I scream internally. This is the downside of living in a small town. I really don’t want to discuss my mating habits or lack thereof with my eighty-year-old patient.

“I heard it didn’t go that well.”

I haven’t texted Arthur back yet. He politely asks for a second date but I’m pretty sure he was as miserable as I was. I’d rather spend the rest of my life with poptarts and cats than go through another awkward dinner date.

I nod reluctantly, bracing myself for a deluge of his grandson’s amazing qualities and why I should give him another chance.

Right when Mr. Cumberland opens his mouth to speak, another nurse at the station yells at me that I am needed in the prep room. They have just admitted a patient who needs immediate attention and surgery. Without saying goodbye to Mr. Cumberland, I spring into action.

“That guy who was here last week to see you. He’s here,” she tells me.

I don’t even understand the words coming out of her mouth, but I smell smoke and searing flesh before I even see him. Max is lying on his back on a gurney, a blackened gash on his left shoulder. They have already removed the top of his fireman’s suit and helmet. He is staring at the ceiling with his beautiful green eyes and I wonder what he is thinking. He has inhaled a lot of smoke and lost his voice, I was told, but he should be okay. I need to clean his wounds immediately and run some tests before the emergency surgery.

I gaze at him and Max gives me a weak smile of recognition. There are smudges of ash on his cheeks. I smile back but I feel like I should be crying. He’s alive. The wounds are ghastly but they are not permanent. He should be okay, my expert nurse’s eye tells me but I feel like my heart has been ripped out. The red gash on his shoulder is covered with hideous burns. I can’t even imagine the amount of pain he is in and what dangers he faced tonight.

Mechanically, I go through the motions, while everyone around me hustles around Max to get him ready for surgery.
