Scott Sinclair had managed to acquire a cassette player and found a free interview room where they could listen to the tape away from background noise.

‘Do you want me to—?’"It’s fine," Reid cut Kelvin off. You met Peter Church, so you might be more attuned to his speech.’

Sinclair slipped the cassette into the machine, and they settled down to listen. Although it predated PACE protocols, the two detectives conducting the interview gave their names as DI Goodrum and DS Rallison, the latter going on to confirm that they were interviewing Peter Church. There was apparently no legal representative in the room.

The detectives weren’t accustomed to recording interviews, it seemed, and in the early part of the interview they sounded self-conscious. It quickly became clear that their understanding of learning disabilities was non-existent and they made no allowance for Peter Church’s limited mental capacity. They spoke to him in the same way they would any suspect, using complex language and long, rambling sentences. Nor did they allow the Church sufficient time to process what they were asking of him. Frustrated by his apparent lack of cooperation, their tone became increasingly confrontational and aggressive, making Kelvin cringe.

The line of questioning began with Church’s movements in the afternoon and evening of the day Robina went missing, and his relationship with Robina. But about twenty minutes into the interview, the focus suddenly changed. It began with a rustle and clatter; something being thrown on the table?
