Chapter Ten
Dallas
I was antsy all day knowing that I would be seeing Jonah again. I wondered how early was too early to show up for our date. Yesterday had completely blown me away. It was beyond anything I had ever expected. Now all I had to do was not screw this up.
I liked Jonah a lot and Sebastian too, who seemed to like me as well, which I hoped would score points with his owner.
When it came time for me to be able to leave my house and show up at a time that wasn’t obscenely early, I locked up and made my way to Jonah’s house. He was outside with Sebastian, cleaning off his business sign.
“Good afternoon,” I said.
He smiled at me, but it seemed forced. Sebastian lay at his feet, as if trying to comfort him in some way, like I’d seen him comfort the residents yesterday.
“Everything all right?” I asked.
“Yeah,” he said. “This morning there was a whole bunch of mud caked on the sign, like someone had flung it on there.”
“Oh,” I said, and I flicked my gaze towards Mr. Jones house.
“Yeah,” Jonah said. “That was my thought, too. But it could have just been teenagers having a good time. I don’t know. Maybe I’ll set up another security camera that points to the front of the house.”
“I’m sorry, Jonah. That sucks.”
“Yeah,” he said. “Anyway, how was your evening?”
I grinned and my cheeks heated. My evening had been good. I had spent a majority of it thinking about him and the day we had spent together.
Jonah laughed when he looked back at me and I knew my face was one hundred percent readable.
“Yeah,” he said. “I spent a lot of time thinking about our day, too.”
“Shall we go to the dog park?”
“Yeah, that sounds great. Let me grab my stuff.”
I let myself in the gate and Sebastian trotted over to me. He rolled onto his belly and I bent down to give him a rub down.
Jonah came back out of the house with a reusable grocery bag.
“What all do you have there?” I asked.
“Just some flyers about the doggy daycare, homemade treats that I want to give away to people who are interested, and other necessary stuff I need while at the park. Bags, water bowl, and water. Oh, and this morning I picked up two cinnamon rolls from the bakery for us. These things are great. Have you been to Sweet Cakes bakery yet?”
I shook my head. “It looks good. I’ve had to deliver there a few times, but I was able to resist purchasing anything.”
“Oh, don’t resist,” Jonah said. “The cinnamon rolls are the size of your face.”
I instinctively sucked in my gut. “Yeah, I can’t imagine the calorie content on one of those. I probably don’t need one.”
Jonah’s face fell and I felt like a tool.
“I mean, I’d love one. I just should be watching what I eat. But I’ll have one with you. I can worry about calories another day.”
Jonah waved his hand in the air dismissively.
