Sixteen

The blackness in front of us is unlike anything I have ever seen. It seems to swallow the light and the air around us. Even the miniscule amount of light coming in from behind us is sucked into the void. Standing at the threshold, we peer into the abyss as a chill emanates from the unseen depths.

“I think someone forgot to pay their light bill.” Grissel’s giggle echoes through the darkness, which feels alive, pulsating with unseen energies and secrets that lie in wait.

As I grasp my companion’s hands, it is as if we are being challenged to step on the path forward, one that will test our faith and the strength of our conviction. Our strength together will get us through this last hurdle—at least, I hope it is the last. As long as we stand together, facing whatever comes our way, I know we will make it to the other side and to Brandon.

“Ready?” I ask. My voice is steady despite the pounding of my heart.

I’m surprised when Rebecca is the first one to answer. “Ready.”

“Ready,” Grissel says loud and clear.

We step into the blackness as the heavy thud of the door slamming shut behind us plunges everything into complete darkness.

I whirl around, reaching for the door. “The compass-”

“I don’t think it will be any more help,” Grissel says. She quickly takes back the hand I’d extended in a futile search for our lost guide, enveloping it securely in her own.

Rebecca’s hand shakes violently. “This isn’t good,” she gasps. Her breath comes fast and heavy, the start of a full-blown panic attack taking hold of her.

My own fears of what lurks in the darkness overcome me. “We’re here with you, Rebecca.” I grasp any ounce of conviction I can muster. “Take deep breaths,” my voice quivers slightly.

Grissel’s voice slices through the air. “Moving forward is our best bet. The sooner we move, the sooner we’re out of here.”

We each take one step and then another, cautiously venturing into the unknown. It is an unusual feeling to move forward without being able to see obstacles in the way. Given my knack for tripping over thin air, it’s oddly surprising that I manage to stay on my feet.

Ten steps into the blackness, Rebecca is still shaking, but I can hear her taking deep breaths to keep herself calm. I also need to take a few breaths, wondering how Grissel isn’t affected by being in a room of nothingness.

“Only a few more steps,” Grissel’s words drift from the left.

I turn towards her voice. “How do you sound so sure?”

“We have a ghostly guide.” There is a note of curiosity in her voice.

“Isn’t everyone in the Underworld technically a ghost?”

She chuckles lightly. “It appears there are ghosts who become even ghostier.”

As Grissel gently pulls me forward, I relay the move to Rebecca, encouraging her with a soft hand tug. “So, is this he or she helping us?”

“That’s what I’m banking on.” I imagine the vampire shrugging her shoulders. “But let’s be honest, in the Underworld, it’s a coin toss whether she is helping or leading us to our doom.
