chapter FIFTEEN

I could have killed her, Robyn thought. I could have killed her with my bare hands.

The Morrigan’s words kept ringing in her ears. At first, the fighter had tried to provoke her by insulting her. Robyn had listened to the Morrigan’s comments on her body and her scars, but she hadn’t really cared. She’d heard it all before. Then, the Morrigan had said things about Lucy and the things she would do to her—and Robyn had snapped. She didn’t know how else to explain it. One second, she’d been calm and in control, and the next she’d turned into a mindless murder machine. If the guards hadn’t stopped her, that woman would have been dead now.

She shuddered, pulling her knees closer to her chest. She’d always known she was messed up, but she hadn’t thought she was messed up enough to end another person’s life.

She kept glancing at the door, waiting for Andrew to return. She knew the Morrigan needed his expertise, but a childish, selfish part of her wished he could have stayed with her instead. Things made more sense when he was around. She might not believe in his silly everything-will-be-okay mantra, but she still liked hearing him say it. Most of all, she didn’t want to be alone. She didn’t want to think about the fight and the crime she’d almost committed.

When the door finally opened, it wasn’t Andrew who entered the locker room. Instead, she saw Mark standing in the doorway.

“She’s in here,” Mark said, holding the door open for Swanson. The old man walked in without using his cane. Panic rushed through her. Swanson was not in a good mood.

“I’m sorry.” She lowered her gaze. “I really was planning to hold back. I’m sorry.”

“It was quite the performance, but I don’t think you altered your underdog status. You did fine, dear.” Swanson looked around the room, frowning. “Have you seen that new doctor on the medical team? I need to have a word with him.”

Robyn’s eyes widened. This was exactly what she’d been trying to avoid.

“I think he followed the ambulance to the hospital,” she lied. “Why do you ask?”

“He doesn’t seem to share our view on the importance of discretion. Don’t worry about it, dear. Focus on the semifinal. We’ll take care of this little problem.”

She nodded. That’s exactly what I’m worried about.

Swanson left the room. Mark followed him to the door but then came to a stop, turning around to face her again. His eyes were cold and full of resentment. Swanson may have forgiven her outburst in the ring, but Mark definitely hadn’t.

“Swanson might believe your lies about that new doctor, but I don’t,” he said in a low voice. “I saw how he looked at you. This was not the first time you two met. I don’t know why everyone seems to accept that there’s a new guy on the medical team no one remembers hiring, but I’m not buying it. If he’s up to something, there will be consequences for both of you.
