Chapter Thirteen

Revulsion pooled in Shay’s stomach. Once upon a time, she’d fancied herself in love with the man in front of her. Because he’d made her nervous, and all her friends had always giggled about boys who gave them butterflies. Because he’d paid attention to her and bought her presents when all her friends had complained their boyfriends wouldn’t even take them to McDonald’s and pay.

She knew she’d been young and sheltered and Frankie had targeted her because she was pretty and he fancied her dumb and weak enough to be the kind of woman who’d fit well on his arm. There were excuses she could make herself feel better with, sure.

But faced with the reality of the situation, she could only feel sick to her stomach over how stupid she’d been.

Still, that didn’t change her current situation.

And Frankie was right. She’d changed. Gotten smarter and stronger, and she could feel ill over that young woman making bad choices, but this woman wasn’t going to repeat those mistakes.

This woman had learned how to fight, thanks to the man standing next to her, and that’s what she was going to do.

She had to be careful about what she said and how she said it, but she couldn’t stand Frankie’s attention on Granger. So, she broke her silence.

“So, Frank,” she said, knowing he’d hated that because it had been his grandfather’s name, and he blamed his grandfather for all the work he’d had to do to rebuild the Vianni name.

Even though it had been his father who’d made the mistakes that had gotten Frank thrown in jail, where he’d died.

“I know I was a great catch and all, but this seems like an awful lot of work to get back a wife who clearly didn’t want you.”

Like she’d hoped, his attention turned back to her. He smiled, that cruel smile that had her stomach cramping, and a muscle memory wanting her to flinch and brace herself for a blow.

She managed to fight back the flinch, but it was a near thing.

“Oh, it wasn’t so clear, was it, Veronica? You wanted me well enough.”

Another roll of nausea went through her, but she held his dark gaze. “I think you have me confused with one of your prostitutes.”

He let out a little tinkle of a laugh as though she had a delightful sense of humor. “You always could make me laugh, Veronica. It was a shame you were so stupid. We could have done great things together.”

The sad thing was, when she’d been eighteen, she’d believed him. That she was stupid. That everything that went wrong was her fault. Luckily, she wasn’t eighteen anymore.

“So,” he said conversationally, walking away from her and Granger and toward the door. She didn’t let her gaze follow him. She went back to looking forward at the wall.

“When do you think your friends will be arriving?”

Terror gripped her in a new way. Your friends. He meant North Star. And if he was bringing it up...

That meant he’d set a trap for North Star.
