CHAPTER 14

the sweat lodge

Carlo and Big Lou were seated at a table at the front of the squad room, going over some last-minute details for the operation. There were 10 others in the room, all equipped for this mornings’ Lawful Invasion of the Ridge Motel. Coffee was flowing freely as the men and women conversed and laughed awaiting the Operations Briefing.

Last minute roster changes complete, Carlo stepped up in front of the room, “Good morning, ladies and gentlemen, thanks for your help and patience. Our target is the Ridge Motel, specifically the Trap in Rooms 11 and 12. The location and subsequent probable cause was developed over the past 60 days through Confidential Source buys and extensive surveillance. Take a look at the maps my partner is passing out, it is an aerial view of the target and our route to it. Familiarize yourself with the map, particularly the wooded area and John’s Drive. If anyone tries to run, they will probably go around the back of the building and head toward it. There will be a Sheriff’s K9 Unit on John’s who will help deal with that, so get a description and direction of flight out on our channel ASAP. The stack and support element assignments are on the board. As the number 1, I will lead us up to Room 11 first. Number 2 is Czarnota with the pry bar, Big Lou has the ram at number 3.”

“Our target doors are about 15 feet apart and the Motel rooms are small, only about 150 square feet including the bathroom. The doors look like you could blow on them and they will come off the hinges. We are going to adjust our entry to accommodate those variables. After I knock and announce at #11, I will kick it and, if it gives, go straight in covering the sleeping area to the left, Numbers 4 and 5 follow me in and secure it. If it works out that way, once we are in #11, Big Lou and Czarnota will position to hit #12 with the rest of the stack. As soon as we have dominated #11 we will give the signal to hit #12. Lou…”

Lou moved to front and center as he took the floor and began, “First of all, if my partner kicks it in, I will be able to for sure.”

A few team members chuckled at the dig on Carlo as Lou continued, “All kidding aside, we think we will be able to just kick them, but we will have the tools in case we can’t.”

Turning toward the whiteboard he went over who would be making entry with him at 12 using the identical plan of action as described for 11. Lou added, “We may hear or see something in 12 that requires our attention before 11 is secured. It will be my call on entry.”

When Lou had finished, Carlo read the Ops Plan aloud, word for word, covering all of the necessary details for high-risk warrant execution;
