TWENTY-NINE

ALEX

I can hear Shane’s pounding footsteps all the way in the kitchen. He’s in a mood this morning, and I’m pretty sure it has everything to do with the woman I saw sneaking out the front door earlier. Sam thought she snuck out with us none the wiser, but I watched from my bedroom window until she crawled into the car, skirting the guard shack Shane installed.

“Alex,” Shane mutters, making a beeline for the coffee.

“Good morning! How did everything go last night?” I ask, hiding my grin by shoving another spoonful of cereal into my mouth.

“Fine.”

“Oh? Nothing exciting happened? Perhaps something stimulating? No big climax we need to talk about?”

“Fuck you,” he spits, glowering.

“Come on, Shane, give me all the dirty details. I’m dying to know if she—”

“Do not finish that sentence.” He slams the cupboard closed.

Ren walks in, looking like he barely slept himself. Great, they’re both grumpy. Makes it more fun to tease them when they are all tied up over a woman.

“What about you, Ren? Have a good night?” I wink at Shane, who is still shooting daggers at me.

“It was fine,” he says, getting his own coffee.

“Probably not as fine as Shane’s.”

“I’m sure not. He was practically balls deep in her when I saw them last.” Ren smirks, making me choke on my spoon.

“Oh, for fuck’s sake. The last time I saw you, you were carting that girl off to safety, and we were in the middle of a gunfight,” Shane hisses.

“Actually, I saw you hauling Sam over your shoulder and smacking her ass on the way back to your car. I figured I should find my own ride home after that.”

Ren is always stating things so matter-of-factly I never know if he’s joking or not. Either way, Shane’s face turns red, which is always a sure sign he got laid.

“You’re blushing, Shane.” I smirk at him, and he flips me off.

“You going to call her?” Ren asks.

“What? No. She bolted at dawn, I’m sure. Didn’t even wake me up.”

“It was more around seven,” I murmur, finishing up my breakfast.

Shane’s gaze swings to me. “You saw her? Why didn’t you stop her?”

“Uh, because she was climbing into a car? Did you want me to yell out the window?” I go to the sink and rinse out my bowl.

Shane mumbles curses under his breath, striding out, probably to go sulk more. You’d think getting laid would relax him, but he is wound tighter than a nun’s asshole.

“Alex, you need to call Sam,” Ren states before sipping his coffee.

“Why? You think I’m going to play matchmaker with those two? Fuck that. Maybe I’ll have a shot with her if Shane is acting all butt hurt.”

“I don’t care if you fuck her, but I’m assuming Shane didn’t take the time to find out if she got any intel from the man she killed. We need to know what he said. Helms will be asking as well. He wasn’t pleased when I told him we didn’t have anyone to question.”

“Fine, but Shane can suck my dick if he thinks I’m going to be his little informant on her.
