CHAPTER

VII

That afternoon Gil rode his bike around Cayuga Island. He saw no sign of Linda. He parked his bike next to the basketball court in Jayne Park and waited a few minutes. Where was she, he wondered. He wandered around the park staring at the ground.

Gil circled around the island before stopping briefly in front of the Daulton house.

A few minutes later Gil crossed the bridge leaving Cayuga Island. He noticed Linda Daulton on rollerblades behind St. Mark’s Catholic Church talking to Danny Rutherford. Why would Linda hang around with him, he wondered. Danny was one of the worst students in school and constantly in detention.

As Gil entered the church parking lot, Danny drove away. When Linda saw Gil, she stopped skating. “Sorry, Gil.” She pulled at her blond hair. “I didn’t want my mother to see me with you.”

“What’s her problem?” asked Gil.

Linda shook her head. “She thinks she can run my life. All she ever does is tell me what to do.”

“What did she think of Paul?” Gil got off his bike.

Linda pressed her fingers against her lips. “She wondered how I could date such a loser.”

Gil pointed his finger at her. “Paul wasn’t a loser.”

Linda grabbed Gil’s arm. “He wasn’t my mother’s idea of a real man.”

“What do you mean?”

“She wanted me to date one of the football players.”

“Would she hate him enough to kill him?”

Linda’s jaw dropped. “Please. My mother’s no killer.”

“When was the last time you saw Paul?”

Linda shrugged her shoulders.

“Think, will ya?” Gil couldn’t believe she wouldn’t answer the question.

Linda gritted her teeth. “Whatever was between Paul and me is over. Leave me alone.”

“I just asked when you last saw him.”

“I don’t know!” shouted Linda shouted at the top of her lungs.

Realizing he would not get any information out of her, Gil rode away.

In the parking lot of a drug store, he noticed Danny’s car. As he passed the entrance, he heard someone call his name. Gil faced Danny.

Danny smiled. “Heard about your call from Satan last night.”

Gil inched toward the Black Raven leader. “What was the big idea?”

Danny’s eyes widened. “Watch your tongue, Leduc, or I’ll rip it out of your throat.”

“How’d you find out?” Gil clenched his fist.

“I’ve got my ways of knowing things, man. You’d be surprised what I know.”

“Who killed Paul?”

Danny laughed. “Figured you’d ask. I wouldn’t kill someone like Paul. Someone like you maybe.” Danny pointed his finger at Gil. “I’m not through with you yet, Leduc.”

Gil stood still. “I’m not scared, Danny.”

The Black Raven leader drove away.

Gil rode his bike over to Niagara Falls Boulevard. As he passed the Mobil gas station, he heard someone call his name. Gil stopped his bike and saw Mark Clar darting toward him. “I’ll kill you, Leduc.”

“Like to see you try, Mark.”

“Since when are you so tough?” Mark smiled as he stood with his hands on his hips.

Gil knew he had to find out what Mark knew about Paul’s murder. “When was the last time you saw Paul?”

Mark shrugged his shoulders. “Dunno.
