Reed watched the couple hugging, tears streaming down both their faces. He was used to clients, both men and women, getting emotional, but usually it was tears of anger or hurt. Tears of joy were a nice change. Yesterday, Georgia had sat in his office planning to file for divorce, and today she couldn’t live without this guy. Thanks to Monica’s intervention.

Could some of his other clients possibly have worked things out? Maybe he was too quick to push people into a divorce. But they shouldn’t be coming into his office unless they wanted one. He asked clients flat out in the initial consultation if there was any chance of a reconciliation. On a few occasions, clients had confessed they hoped to work things out with their spouses. He advised them to seek marriage counseling. He didn’t want to waste his time on clients who weren’t serious about getting divorced.

If Georgia and Mike got counseling, maybe they’d discover Monica had merely prolonged the inevitable and they’d go through with the divorce. Georgia said she needed some time to think. Maybe she’d be back in his office in another week.

He hoped like hell that wasn’t the case.

Monica wore a dreamy expression. High on romance. “I could use some champagne.”

“Think I’ll join you.”

She looked surprised and a bit confused. “This really isn’t something for you to be celebrating, is it?”

“It turned out to be the right thing for Georgia, so it’s a good thing.”

She nodded slowly, as if trying to process his comment. “Ah, okay.”

En route to the champagne booth, they passed by the mime. When Reed had translated the I love you note for Monica, nervous anticipation had his heart pounding like a son of a bitch, and he’d about broken out in a cold sweat, as if he was waiting for her to repeat the words to him. That was insane. Two women had uttered those words to him, and he’d dropped them faster than five grand in an Armani store. He’d never spoken those words to a woman. However, saying them to Monica had felt right. What the hell? He hadn’t even known her a week. Not like he loved her. She drove him crazy. Half the time he didn’t know if he wanted to kiss her or beat his head against a wall. He was in lust with her. That was it.

“Isn’t that your mom?” Monica said, directing the rose in her hand toward a crêpe stand.

It was indeed his mother and Bill standing in line, holding hands, laughing. Bill had on a blue floral Hawaiian shirt. The type of shirt that should only be worn to a luau in Hawaii. Reed added shitty dresser to his list of issues with the guy.

“Yeah, it is.”

They walked over to them.

“Bonjour,” Monica said.

“Well, bonjour,” his mother said.

His mother and Monica hugged. Reed gave Bill an awkward nod hello, then introduced him to Monica. In his midfifties, Bill was in decent shape, tall, with short gray hair.

A hopeful smile on her face, his mother glanced between him and Monica.
