Chapter 7

Semyon knew something was different the instant consciousness came to him. The last thing he remembered was the agony that had filled every fiber of his body, the feeling of sand beneath him, and Nari’s worried sighs.

The first clue that something was different was the fact that he didn’t hurt—anywhere. His shoulder felt fine and breathing wasn’t an issue at all. In fact, he gloried in that fact as he drew in a deep breath and let it out.

Nothing hurt.

Not even his leg hurt, and Semyon knew his leg injury was more dangerous than the laser wound. Semyon took a chance and wiggled his toes. When nothing happened except the movement of his toes brushing against each other, Semyon opened his eyes and looked down.

A blanket covered him, but it wasn’t enough to hide the fact that he could lift his leg and bend his knee with no problem or pain. Semyon flipped back the covers. Except for a fading pink scar on his leg just below the knee, there was no indication that anything had happened.

The blanket…Semyon’s jaw dropped as he suddenly realized that he was not in the cave in the middle of the desert but in an actual room. And it was a damn nice room, too. He was lying on a large bed, covered in some of the softest tan blankets he had ever felt.

The walls of the room were stone, but warm colorful tapestries gave it a homey, comfortable feel. The wooden furniture that sat around the room—including a large chest, bookshelf, and low platform lounging couch with several pillows in different colors— gave the room the rest of it what it needed to make Semyon feel like he had gone from hell to heaven.

He just wanted to know how he got there.

And where exactly here was.

Semyon pushed himself up into a sitting position against the pillows behind him. There was a window to one side of the bed, but the only thing he could see was the tops of palm trees and cliffs off in the background.

The sounds, though, brought the outdoors inside. There seemed to be a lot of activity below his window—everything from people talking to dogs barking to livestock moving around. Semyon was pretty sure he was in some sort of town.

And that was a long way from a cave at the Al’Hareen Oasis.

Semyon started to swing his legs over the side of the bed, intent on finding someone to tell him where he was and what in the hell was going on, when the door to his room swung open. He instantly tensed.

“You’re awake.”

Semyon’s eyebrows shot up as he looked at the last person he thought to see. “Bogden?”

The black-haired man touched his fingers to his forehead and bowed his head slightly. “That’s Shaikh Bogden Dhal Wuher Al’Abdalha, thank you very much.”

Semyon’s forehead wrinkled as he took in the man’s desert garb. “Yeah, I remember hearing something about you taking off to the wilds of the high desert plains. I wasn’t sure I’d ever see you again.
