Day 5

Five Years Later

Milwaukee, WI

“HAPPY Birthday,” Bobbi called from the desk next to Don as he set his bag down next to the cupcake she had obviously placed on his desk.

“Thank you,” Donald said before giving her a hug. “But you remember that today I have an appointment with the doctor.” Donald was finding it hard to be in a festive mood about turning twenty-seven.

“So why are you here?” she asked accusingly. “Not that I’m complaining, because then I couldn’t give you this.” She grinned and handed him a wrapped present. Donald hadn’t gotten an official birthday gift in years. “Go ahead, open it,” she said excitedly, and Donald obliged with a smile, tearing off the wrappings and opening the box. “I made them for you.” Inside was a pair of hand-knitted mittens with a matching scarf and hat. “I sort of figured that since this is your first winter in the frozen north, you’ll need something to keep you warm.”

Donald gave her a hug. “Thank you. I needed something like this today, and this was really thoughtful.” The worry he’d managed to keep at bay for days seemed to break over him all at once.

“So why are you here?” Bobbi asked as she sat down at her chair, already typing away. The woman was wonderful, with a brilliant mind, and she could also type and program while she was talking about something completely different. It was both amazing and infuriating.

“The doctor is only a mile away from here, and I need something to keep my mind off it,” Donald replied, sitting down to get to work. Bobbi was the only person at the office that Donald had shared his suspicions and worries with. She was a big woman, with a heart of gold and a mind like a steel trap. Bobbi was a gifted programmer and systems designer who had the rare ability to see the big picture as well as the patience to drill down into the details when needed. She’d become one of Donald’s best friends since he’d transferred from Richmond to Milwaukee six months earlier. She was, technically, Donald’s boss, but they worked as a team, along with Randy, the third programmer, developing the code for a new flight simulation system for training military pilots.

Donald started his PC and logged in, making sure all his security protocols were functioning properly before starting to run their current program. “You know,” Bobbi said from next to him, “I was thinking that we should tighten up the flight settings. I think there’s too much play in the flight controls, and this needs to be as accurate as possible.” Of all the people on the team, Bobbi was also the most experienced pilot.

“I was thinking we could make that configurable, so that instead of programming it, we could allow it to be set during testing. That way we’re sure to get it just right. There has to be some difference between planes, even if it’s small, and this will give
