Kit’s acceptance – both of and from the team – gave him a newfound confidence that acted as a potent balm to his normally dominant self-conscious anxieties. And it felt great. He hadn’t quite appreciated how much of his life was spent second-guessing himself, worrying about how he was perceived, and being crippled by doubt. To be relieved of all that baggage was transformational – he felt almost zen-like.

It didn’t go unnoticed. It wasn’t that he was now swaggering around like a smug twat, rather he just had an ease with himself that was so glaringly absent until now that his peers, colleagues and – in particular – Polly couldn’t help but comment on.

“You seem really happy lately,” she said, the evening after the Forester escapade. “Did you and Laura… get together at all?”

“No, we’ve just been hanging out,” Kit said coyly. “I’m not sure it’s going in that direction anyway… I just really like spending time with her. And I really click with the people in her philosophy group.”

This was the ruse Laura has instructed he implement in order to cover their clandestine extra-curricular activities from their mutual friend, and the roll of Polly’s eyes suggested it was an effective one.

“Those dorks are sooooo boring… no wonder you fit in. But hey, if it makes you happy – and it clearly does – then more power to ya.”

“Oh, listen, my stepdad’s been extra generous with his contribution to my maintenance fund, so if you’re still worried about the rent next month, I can cover for you.”

“That’s nice of you, sweetheart, but I got a job in a few weeks that’s going to cover it and then some. Hey, why does your step-dad pay out so often anyway?”

“I think it’s guilt money for sleeping with my mum.”

This was half accurate. Keith – the man Kit’s mum had only recently married after an interminably long courtship – was a self-made businessman who was desperate for Kit’s approval. He was fairly sure that their refusal to marry until after Kit had moved away to university was all down to Keith. The frequent financial contributions he made towards Kit’s student life were actually rather modest, but he needed something to explain away his sudden cash injection – even if he was careful not to spend it too obviously.

Financial security was also proving to be something of a confidence-builder. Kit treated himself to a few tailored shirts and a jacket that would normally have been well out his price range, and walking about town in his new threads made him feel more comfortable in his own skin than he had in years. It was telling, though, that when he turned up to the mansion for celebratory drinks on the following Saturday evening, he reverted somewhat to type – a little awkward, a little shy, a little less sure of himself. Compared to ‘normal’ people he was something special – whether they knew it or not. But compared to these sexual gods and goddesses he saw himself very much as a beta male.
