Hopefully, you can see how the Cleopatras were not only ruling in Egypt with the Ptolemys but also they held a close relationship with the Seleucid Kingdom and the truly vicious Antiochus family of rulers.
161 to 101 BC Cleopatra III-Daughter of Cleopatra II and Ptolemy VI, Cleopatra III married her uncle, Ptolemy VIII, while her mother was still his official wife. She had two sons - Ptolemy IX and Ptolemy X as well as three daughters, Cleopatra IV, Cleopatra Tryphaena, and Cleopatra Selene. It was so easy to name people in the old days, but also remember each one of these women and their somewhat hapless husbands would be close relatives to the incarnate God.
Cleopatra III was allowed to select succession to one of her sons, Ptolemy IX and X. The Alexandrians wanted Ptolemy IX, governor of Cyprus to be co-regent. To keep peace, he was taken to Alexandria to co-rule and Cleopatra's favorite, Ptolemy X was sent to Cyprus. As you can imagine, Ptolemy IX was married to his sister, Cleopatra IV but their mother repudiated the marriage and replaced her with another sister, Cleopatra Selene. Can you imagine marrying the wrong sister? What a mess!! Luckily if you had a Cleopatra tattoo, it was good for many possible women, so letâs continue.
Cleopatra IV-Cleopatra IV went to Cyprus where she tried to raise an army and to marry Ptolemy X. She failed and moved on to Syria where she used her army as a dowry and married Antiochus IX who was son of Antiochus Sidetes and Cleopatra Thea. I sure hope you are following all of this. Just kidding; I have a cheat sheet and other graphic for you. Cleopatra III, finally, succeeded in driving out Ptolemy IX in 107 BC when she accused him of trying to murder her. He left behind his wife and his two sons. His brother returned from Cyprus and assumed the throne. After the death of Ptolemy X in a naval battle, Ptolemy IX, who was now in his mid-fifties, was brought back to Alexandria to try to put back together the Ptolemaic Empire.
Cleopatra Berenice- Ptolemy IX died at the age of 62 and left no legitimate heir to the throne as both of his sons by Cleopatra Selene appear to have died at a young age. His daughter Cleopatra Berenice ruled alone for a while after his death. The Cleopatras seemed to have held everything together but it wasnât easy. Here are some more details before we go on.
