Chapter Twelve

Paul

“And Daddy, do you know what else we did today?” Amelia asked me, bouncing in her chair at the dinner table.

“What, sweetheart? What else did you do after you went to the library?” I asked.

“Okay, so,” Amelia said, vibrating with excitement. “First, I said hi to the two lions out front once I knew they wouldn’t eat me. Then when we went inside, Melissa let me check out so many books. So, one was a cookbook for kids, and we got another one about chemistry. And do you know what?”

“I don’t know. Tell me!”

“So, cooking is chemistry,” she squealed in glee. “Did you know that?”

“I supposed I did, a long, long time ago, but I haven’t thought about it since I was a kid. You’re lucky to have Melissa.”

I looked over to Melissa. Her face radiated, with the joy of the evening and the afterglow of our incredible night together. Her eyes beamed with such adoration for Amelia that I could see she loved Amelia almost as much as I did.

“Daddy, it’s hard to imagine you ever being a kid,” Amelia said with a contemplative look.

Melissa almost choked on her wine, suppressing a laugh. “Did you wear business suits to preschool?” Melissa asked with a devilish smile.

“Of course not,” I said, making a grave face. “The business suits didn’t start until kindergarten. Only polo shirts before then.”

Amelia exploded in laughter. “Daddy! When did you get funny?” Amelia asked.

“Are you feeling all right, Paul? Should we call a doctor?” Melissa said with a playful nudge.

Even as a child, I had no rapport with children. What’s more, under no circumstances did I ever consider myself to be one of them.

“And how about you, Daddy? What did you do today?”

“Nothing nearly as exciting as you two. I’m jealous. I wish I could spend the day with you at the library,” I said.

“Why can’t you?” Amelia asked with genuine curiosity, pouting her lower lip in contemplation.

“This silly thing called work. I know,” I said. “But actually, I have an idea. Amelia, I think you’re going to like this.”

“Tell me, tell me, tell me,” she blurted in a rush, jumping up and down with even more energy.

“You remember our house in the Hamptons?”

“With the pool and the tennis and the ponies!”

“That’s the one,” I said. “I have a business meeting out there tomorrow. How would you and Melissa like to relax a little bit there while I’m working?”

“Yes! Let’s go! Can Melissa meet Couscous and Pita Pocket?” Amelia said.

“Couscous and Pita Pocket?” Melissa asked in a voice that relayed her understandable confusion. “I’ve eaten those things, but I don’t know how I’d meet them…”

“No, silly!” Amelia said, almost unable to talk from laughing. “Couscous and Pita Pocket are my horsies!”

I recognized the look on Melissa’s face from how often I made it myself. It was a plea for me to translate from Amelia-ese to English.

“We have an Arabian horse and a thoroughbred,” I explained. “She asked what Arabian meant, and I told her it was like the Moroccan restaurant where we had tagine and couscous.
