“He speaks only English, dear. At least that’s what Audet

said.”

“Audet told you true.”

“Hello, then,” Lucette said, and her father smiled. He

wheeled her around the table, dragging away the seat next to his

both sat facing him.

“How old are you?” Michael asked Lucette.

“Seven,” she said. “I’ll be eight next month.”

“Happy early birthday.”

Moreau smiled again, but now Michael saw that there were

tears in his eyes. The mayor didn’t let Lucette see, and he kept

his sadness out of his voice.

“My daughter has Pompe disease,” he said. “We have two

doctors left in Bordeaux, and they both agree. Are you familiar

with the disease?”

Michael shook his head.

“It’s quite rare. A progressive disease, meaning it gets worse

and worse. The muscles get weaker and weaker over time, but

worst of all are the respiratory troubles. With regular access to

a team of specialists, life expectancy can be prolonged signifi-

cantly. But our doctors are only general practitioners. They

found her two portable ventilators, one to assist her breathing

during the day and one for helping her while she sleeps. They do

what they can for her. We owe them much. But they cannot rec-

ommend a diet to mitigate the disease, because they lost access

to that information when the French internet went down. They

cannot administer enzyme replacement therapy. They have
