Sam was back the next morning, but I didn’t see him until we got into Windsor. He’d made his own coffee, and from the smell of it, he’d resorted to instant.

“Bate’s yacht docked in Mexico the day after Tabitha was taken,” Dan told us, pointing at a map on the screen. “And from there it sailed to Guatemala then Colombia. We’re trying to find out what he offloaded and where, but he picks out secluded places to dock, and the satellite feeds haven’t given us the information we need.”

My shoulders slumped. Six days since I’d seen my daughter, and who knew how she was being treated? Did she have fresh clothes? Were they feeding her properly? Keeping her safe from the freaks who preyed on young girls like her? A tear trickled down my cheek, and I shoved my chair back, horrified. Everyone’s eyes followed me as I hurried out of the room, cursing myself for having cracked once again.

“You okay?” Emmy whispered as she held the door open for me. “No, stupid question, of course you’re not. Look, let’s take a few minutes, okay?”

“Yeah, whatever.”

I half ran around the corner, straight into a young girl with brown hair who looked from me to Emmy, confused.

“Sorry,” I muttered.

“Uh, I came to see Emmy, but I guess this isn’t a good time?” She fished around in her pocket and passed me a tissue.

“Tia, this is Seven. Seven, this is Tia, Luke’s sister.”

Ah, yes, Mack’s mysterious computer hacker friend, who I hadn’t met yet. “Hi.”

She gave me a little wave. “Hi. What happened?”

“Seven’s daughter got kidnapped, and we’re looking for her.”

Tia squeezed both of my hands in hers. “Don’t worry. Emmy’ll find her. I got kidnapped once, and she found me, no problem.”

“She did?”

Emmy shrugged. “It was a team effort. What are you doing here, anyway?” she asked Tia. “I thought you were busy spending Luke’s money in Paris?”

“Nick said you were short of manpower, and he called Ryan over to help for a couple of days, so I came with him.” Her phone rang, and she pressed it to her ear. “Bradley? Hang on, I’ll come and find you.” She walked backwards towards the elevator. “See you later.”

I watched her go, envious of her freedom. When I was her age, my trips to Paris involved espionage, not shopping, and I’d never have been able to pull off that skirt with those boots either.

“She’s a good kid. At least, she is now. When I first met her two years ago, she was an utter brat.” Emmy said. “And since she’s nearly nineteen, I guess she’s not really a kid anymore either.”

“How did you meet her?”

A faint grimace crossed Emmy’s face. “I dated her brother for a while. A short while.”

“Luke?”

“I’d temporarily lost my mind, okay?”

“What about Black?”

“That’s a long story, and I’ll tell you all the gory details over a bottle of wine someday. But suffice to say, my sanity’s returned, what little of it I had in the first place, and Mack and Luke are suited perfectly.
