Dan parked the car in the nearest parking space to the hotel’s entrance. He took the suitcases out of the trunk and walked to the hotel lobby. Sarah and the kids followed him.

“Please let me help,” Sarah said.

“They aren’t heavy. I’m fine. The kids are hungry. Could you please find a restaurant? I’ll take care of the registration.”

“Okay.”

“By the way, under what name did you make your reservation?”

“Sarah O’Keefe.”

“Oh! Irish, huh?”

“Yes. But O’Keefe is not my married name. After my husband died, I changed my name back to my maiden name. What’s your last name?”

“Kelly. But we’re not Irish, we’re Jewish. Kelly is the last name of my father’s adoptive parents. It’s a long story.”

A bellboy took the suitcases from Dan as he headed for the receptionist desk.

Sarah saw the sign for the hotel’s cafeteria just past the receptionist desk. As she was leading Emily and Nathan toward the cafeteria, Dan called out, “Is it okay if we get the rooms on the same floor?”

“Sure,” Sarah shouted back.

In the cafeteria, the kids complained about the length of the line.

“But look how fast the line is moving,” Sarah said. “You’ll get your food soon enough.” She turned around and saw Dan hurrying to them.

“Sarah,” he said. “They don’t have your reservation and they only have one double-bed room left. But they’re offering us a suite with two separate units—two bedrooms and two bathrooms for the price of one room because of their mistake. Is that okay with you?”

Sarah paused. She was reluctant to share a suite with Dan and Nathan. She had had no choice but to accept the ride from Dan. But whereas having lunch with him was one thing, sharing a suite was totally different. She was about to say no, when she again heard her mother’s voice in her head: “Say yes.”

She followed the order. “Yes,” she told Dan, not believing the word came out of her mouth.

Dan noticed her hesitation. “There’s a door separating each bedroom from the living room area. This is actually like having two separate rooms, but sharing the living room and the kitchen. The kids will love it. The suite’s on the top floor, so they can see most of Disneyland and the ten o’clock firework show from every window.”

“Okay,” Sarah said. “Let me give you my credit card.”

“They’re not charging anything now. You can pay your share later.”

He started to leave, but then turned around and asked if she would mind getting him a Caesar salad.

“No problem.”

Sarah let the kids choose their favorite foods, desserts, and drinks, and purchased two Caesar salads for herself and Dan. They sat in a large booth by a window. The kids were so hungry; they focused on eating as soon as they sat down.

Staring out the window, Sarah replayed the day’s events in her head. She couldn’t digest them all because they had happened so fast. Back in San Francisco she had planned a relaxed trip with Emily. Then the car had broken down and she’d had to accept Dan’s offer.
