SEVENTEEN

We’d slept through much of the previous day, having been up the entire night in support of the search for Charlotte Riche. There’d been brief meetings throughout the daylight hours though. These were conference calls while I stood around our coffee maker with my face near the steam, listening to the results of the Amber alert reports. As with them all, a flurry of activities escalated quick as sightings were reported. And as with many, these leads failed to produce the results we wanted. What we wanted was Charlotte Riche’s safe return to her home.

My heart found a place in my throat. Nesting there with the kind of fear and the anxiety that came with not knowing.

When a call came to the station about a body for us to investigate, there was no knowing what would be found in Buxton Woods, a coastal reserve that was south of us on Hatteras Island. There was no knowing the circumstance yet, but in my gut, I didn’t think it was going to be a lost hiker or a tourist who’d fallen ill. We wouldn’t know until we knew.

This wasn’t my first time at the nature reserve. Jericho had brought me here when I’d first moved to the Outer Banks. A hike through the woods, he’d told me. Only, it was miles and miles of trails and wildlife, and all of it had been beautiful to me, my city eyes taking it in like a sponge absorbing water. That beauty was tarnished soon after when we’d worked a case that involved the heinous torture and murder of a man. The victim at that time had been discovered on the grounds of Buxton Woods. He was my ex-husband who had followed me to the Outer Bank in search of our kidnapped daughter. He wasn’t a cop though, and in his search, his investigation had touched the nerve of a dangerous criminal. They killed him.

I shuddered at the memory of that day, shaking it from my mind. I focused on the road ahead, seeing the front of Jericho’s truck pass the white and brown signs marking the entrance to the reserve. When the news came in about this body, Jericho offered to drive me. I know he was looking out for me, sensitive to the location and the circumstance. Most of the time, I would have been fine on my own, but this was one place that still held my heart with an icy grip. I reached across the center console and ran the back of my fingers over his jaw, his beard stubbly, trimmed short for the hot days. Winter was coming and he’d grow it out soon, make it long enough for me to poke some fun at it.

Tracy sat behind me, quiet as a mouse. Not a word was spoken during the thirty-minute drive. Normally we’d have heard all about the reserve. She kept her head down and her laptop open, her face painted a dusky blue, the shades of it changing with whatever was on the screen.
