scattered to the winds

Whoop-whoops could be heard in the small town at the foot of the mountain. Two choppers hovered over the forest. Fortunately, they were shielded by fog so dense it was impossible to see the ATF’s Special response teams rappelling into the dense canopy. A few large flakes of snow heralded the onset of a massive storm.

The multi-jurisdiction task force gathered at the windows of the Blue Pine Lodge. To their credit, the experts had made short order of the red tape, hierarchy was quickly sorted and a plan of attack was established.

The ATF’s Special Response Teams were in position awaiting the arrival of Cartel reinforcements. When another round of whoop-whoops was heard approaching from the south, they knew the newly formed Los Fuertes Cartel would landing in a matter of minutes.

In The Realm’s kitchen, Sister Wilma was urging Brother Jeremy to flee.

“You actin’ like a damn fool, Jeremy. You gonna git youself kilt. You need to git yourself up and out of here while you can. Ain’t no God gonna watch over you like he did David with Goliath.”

“Wilma, you have been a good and loyal friend and I know you’re right, but I can’t just run away. I am the Lord’s Word on Earth. Our people are not armed. We are not ruthless, murderous or trained in violent techniques of war. I cannot abandon Paradise to ruthless killers. I must stay and protect our home but I will not ask our members to make the same sacrifice. Wilma, dear Sister Wilma, I ask you – no, I implore you to go! Take everyone to the upper tunnels, the ones that only you and I know about, hidden behind the curved waterfall.”

“Have you done lost your mind boy? Those falls be icy as all get out with this snow and sleet. We’ll never get behind those falls! Sure enough we gonna fall in that water and drown.”

“Remember those old boots I put in the tool shed, the ones with nails in the bottoms of them? Use those nail boots, they’ll cut through the ice. Carry the little ones and go, just go!” Jeremy hissed. “All of you will be hidden up there. I left food in boxes toward the back. Go now, please, and keep our people safe. You can hide there for a while. Once the Mexicans take their things or shoot each other, you can come back and we will resume our life together. I cannot just run away. I will remain nearby and join you when I can. The Lord will protect us, Sister Wilma. Go now, save yourself and save our people!”

Grabbing a bent metal triangle from a nail, Sister Wilma sounded the breakfast gong. The adult followers, just released from Below, entered in a cluster, glancing around, confused. The boys came in from their cabin. Sister Thelma Rose herded in the wives.

With his world collapsing, Brother Jeremy barely had time to think. He heard the helicopters approaching. He heard the Intruders shouting to one another, he knew they had mere minutes to evacuate the camp before all hell broke loose.
