Chapter Ten

Marc stared at the light flinging through the air. It moved like tendrils, almost like a flag, and it seemed to go on beyond his line of sight. He frowned, not liking it. Nothing like sending up a flare to tell the enemies where you're hiding. And they had enemies. He'd seen them, the Night Demons, who'd attacked them. These Spirits might be the good guys; they might want to form some kind of alliance. He didn't understand it, and he looked behind Louhi's and Hans' shoulders to check the perimeter.

Louhi squeezed his hands. She couldn't say anything to him, though he guessed she'd tell him to chill. No way. Not here, where he didn't know the rules, and these Spirits were sending out signals so strong even his twin could follow them. He smirked. He'd always been better at tracking and standing watch.

The display ended just as abruptly as it began. "When you need us, you can call. We will come to your aid. And here, we will fight those who seek to harm your work." The Spirit inclined his head.

Just get me back in my body. He sensed his bear, the image hovering above his head, fighting to return to normality. His metaphorical skin itched, the urge to shift hammering at his essences.

I can't let go of Louhi's hand. She told me to hang onto her for dear life. His agitation grew. He caught a quick glance of his twin. Hans didn't look any happier. I think we're done now. Let's go back.

Tension shifted in the air. Marc's muscles tightened. His senses went on high alert. The Spirit remained standing before them, looking all stately and proud. Sure, that'd be fine for them. They could fight in this environment. Being unable to let go of Louhi's hand hindered his fighting. Come on, let's go!

The wind shifted. Not that he'd noticed the wind before, but now…yeah, it'd shifted. Wails—very recognizable wails—cut through the air.

"Louhi," he warned, unable to stay silent any more.

She nodded. "We must take our leave, but we will speak again."

"Go now, before you cannot," the Spirit said. "We will handle this."

Louhi nodded, her expression grave. Squeezing his hand, and presumably his brother's hand, so tight he wondered if his bones would break, she concentrated. A pop, like ascending in an airplane, filled his ears, and when he opened his eyes again, he stood in what he thought was the real world.

"They're going to come through," Louhi said. "Let's get in the vehicle and go."

"What about our stuff?" Hans asked. "We can't leave EU military provisions out here. We have orders." He spun to face the tents.

"Just my tent. Leave it. The supply tent, we can come back for it. We don't have the firepower out here to fight these things." Louhi tugged at their hands.

Marc frowned. "I don't like running from a fight."

Louhi dropped their hands and started running toward the vehicle. "Then think of it as running from your death," she snapped back. "We don't have the fire power to fight them.
