Chapter 6

“Jack, where the hell are you?”

“Stakeout.”

“Aw, come on. No way, man!”

“I’m sorry, babe. My relief will be here around midnight.”

“Midnight? The chocolate soufflé will be ruined by then!”

“I know. I promise I’ll still love it anyway.

“That’s not the point. You’re in your second trimester. You shouldn’t be sitting out in a car the whole night, stalking some bad guy.”

“Actually, I’m not in the car.”

“Where are you?”

“On the roof of the house opposite.”

“Out in the cold?”

“I have a thermos with hot tea. And I brought the audio tape with the relaxation exercises for the baby you gave me. It’s, um, part two, the one with the wolves howling.”

“They say it’s going to snow later. Does your captain know your endangering your health like this? He knows you’re pregnant.”

“I didn’t tell him. Callum, I’m fine. Theo will be here at midnight, I’ll be home before one.”

“I’m not happy.”

“I know. Promise to wait up for me?”

“Sure. Whatever. Just take care. Call if you need anything.”

“I will. See you later.”

Jack made it home around two. The drive in the warm car did nothing, however, to warm him up. It had started snowing three hours ago, and he was sure he couldn’t feel his toes anymore. Or his fingers. Or, for that matter, his ears.

He managed to stick the key into the keyhole after the fourth attempt and turned it with shaky hands.

Callum was there in an instant.

“You’re frozen solid,” he remarked, the worried frown on his forehead betraying the anger in his voice.

“I feel like an icicle,” Jack chattered. His lips were probably blue, they felt too numb to form words.

Without complaint he let Callum help him out of the jacket; his fingers weren’t doing what he wanted them to do anyway. His bones felt like they were carved from ice.

Callum led him directly into the bedroom, where he undressed Jack completely and wrapped him into the duvet. Jack still felt cold, despite the hot water bottle. Callum came back, pressed a mug of hot chocolate into his clammy hands, and, naked, crawled under the blanket as well.

He sat behind Jack, spooning up, all heat and solid coziness. The skin contact revived Jack’s senses to some extent. The tension fled his muscles, he relaxed into the comforting embrace, head softly lolling back against Callum’s shoulder.

“Did you at least get valuable evidence?”

Jack shook his head. “He watched the shopping channel for hours, and then he called a phone sex agency. Theo arrived before it got interesting, though.” He turned his head, and grinned against Callum’s skin, which earned him a possessive squeeze.

“I kept thinking about you,” Jack murmured, lips now warm enough to press light kisses against every inch of Callum’s skin he could reach from his position without having to move more than his head.

“Drink your hot chocolate. It’ll warm you up.”

Obediently Jack took a sip. The warmth and the sweetness rushed through his body, a feeling almost as nice as having the other man’s naked body pressed against his. Jack relaxed more as Callum’s hands started to idly massage his belly.
