Several days passed, and Stone didn’t hear anything from Cassidy. That both relieved and concerned him—on the one hand, it might mean that whoever was bothering her had stopped; on the other, it might mean they’d escalated things and something had happened to her. Other than calling her, he had no way to find out, but he resisted doing that because she’d had enough trouble with one stalker. She didn’t need to deal with another one, no matter how well-intentioned he might be.

By Thursday, though, as his concern for her safety continued to dominate his thoughts, he decided to allow himself one call to find out how she was doing. If he reached her and she was fine, he’d apologize for bothering her, assume any possible interest she might have had in him had evaporated along with the stressful situation she’d been dealing with, and move on. At least that way he’d know one way or the other.

He called on Thursday evening after he got home from the University, settling back on his sofa with a Guinness and a carton of General Tso’s chicken he’d picked up on his way home. As the phone rang several times without picking up, he grew tense. Had something happened to her? Perhaps he should—

“Hello?” Cassidy’s familiar voice at the other end of the line sounded breathless and a little wary.

“Cassidy.” He relaxed back into the cushions. “It’s Alastair Stone. I’m terribly sorry to bother you, but I hadn’t heard anything for a few days and I wanted to make sure you were all right.”

“Alastair. Hi!” She sounded glad to hear from him, adding to his relief. “I was thinking about calling you next week, actually, if you’re still interested in getting together.”

“I am, absolutely. How are—things? Any more problems?”

“Nothing. That’s why I didn’t call. I don’t want to jinx anything, but I think maybe it’s over. Nothing’s moved around since you left on Sunday. No voices, no weird visions…nothing. Jack hasn’t even tried calling back. How about you?”

“Nothing here either. I was a bit concerned when I didn’t hear from you, but I didn’t want you to think I was being pushy.”

“No, it’s fine. It’s nice of you to check on me. I feel bad now—I should have called and let you know things were okay, but I’ve been so busy. I just wanted to get back to having a normal life for a while, you know?”

“Of course. I understand completely. And don’t feel as if you need to call if you’d rather not. I’m always available if you need help, but I won’t intrude on your life. As for anything else—that’s entirely up to you.”

“Thanks, Alastair. Thanks for being my friend. Listen—I need to get going now. Actually I’m off to have coffee with a friend I met at the gym. Normal stuff—who knew?”

“Brilliant,” Stone said. “Take care of yourself, Cassidy, and have a good time.”

He hung up the phone and contemplated the remains of the takeout chicken. He wasn’t entirely convinced Jack had given up, and he wasn’t sure Cassidy was either—but stranger things had happened.
